Is that expression not known in America then? It means it's a good thing.
I am here to tell you absolutely not a single person in the entire United States of America has ever called something a "cracker," except as a derogatory term towards a white person in some parts of the south. I have never heard this expression before in my 41 years of life.
Music? I have not gotten into new music in at least over ten years. But I've been relistening to those wonderful three Soul Coughing albums as I caught one of their shocking reunion shows a few nights ago. |

I went into the album with low expectations as I heard the single Frogs on the radio and didn't like it all but listening to the album as a whole everything just clicked. Some of it verges on the ridiculous and saccharine but old Nick pulls it off. I think you have to go into this album knowing his situation: that two of his sons have died in recent years, that he's struggled with the grief and that he's found religion again. So it's a mix of absolute despair and hope. |

Posted - 11/30/2023 : 12:03:03 I'm giving it another spin to see if I hear something new second time which is often the case Reminds me of something from the past - got a bit of a rock/metal of the late 80's/early 90's feel about it It's like the Beastie Boys but they're fighting for their right to get stoned and chill out (which arguably can also be a form of partying) |

I don't know. Some music takes multiple listens for me to get or appreciate it. Initial impression: Riff reminds me just a tiny bit of Soundgarden, Outshined. Sometimes I like the singer's voice other moments it's annoying. It feels like early 90s rock, which I like quite a bit - I love Pearl Jam - but I'm not sure what to make of this, feels like a bit of other bands stitched together. Which sounds insulting; which I'm not trying to be.
I can see this being played on rock radio and getting tired of hearing it at bars or the random times I hear the radio.
Performance wise it's all good, nothing stands out that amazes me; it also goes on a bit too long for my taste.
The whole verse after the solo and the spoken word interlude seems too much so by the time it gets to the outro I've had enough. It's better than things played on local radio but then...most local rock radio that isn't the indy colelge station is a mix of classic rock everyone's heard way too much of and awful sound music like Stained (sp?) or...I don't even know really I just don't like whenever I'm listening to the big radio stations. NIckelback? Blehh.
It's better than that but goes on too long.
I guess mixed feelings on it, nothing amazing to make me want to hear more but nothing terrible that I had to stop it halfway. Left me curious to hear it again another time and see what to make of it or to hear what their other tunes sound like.
Mixed feelings is a good way to sum it up. |

Posted - 11/21/2023 : 23:27:24 So many of these commercialish manufactured indie bands with female lead singers these days coming out of America - a lot of them if you see them play live they come across a bit like a prom band but otherwise you can't fault the production and sound of some of their studio recordings
Days Move Slow and A Love Profound from the new Bully album recreate the whole 90's indie rock/shoegaze/grunge sound really well (but her vocals get a bit tiring after a while - that said though the dreamy wishy washy vocals against the dirty scrunchy guitars just works so well - what is it that makes this combination of sounds so pleasing?) |

Posted - 11/13/2023 : 17:59:39 A random mix of Chopin, Liszt and Scarlotti. And I'm through the first four discs of Wagner's Ring; just what an incredible, epic experience. It already feels like a natural epic conclusion and I'm not quite a third through the experience. One of the best box sets I've ever purchased.
Van Halen with Roth still holds my attention in the rock world, along with some live Zeppelin from '73 and Queens of the Stone Age's new one and Joe Satriani's most recent album, The Elephants of Mars which is just an incredible album full of unexpected changes and an amazing flow.

Posted - 09/24/2023 : 12:57:50 I can't believe what a great band Van Halen was, Eddie's fantastic yet succinct playing and songwriting, the brother bond with the drums, Michael Anthony's harmony and of course the vaudeville of Roth, somehow it all works and is so different from other hard rock acts.
The production of these recrods is great as well, not dated sounding at all. They're a damn fun band..! Much like Zeppelin's Rock-n-Roll, and Pixies Rock Music embody their subject, so too with VH's Beautiful Girls.
And the album's are a tribute to brevity, around 30 mins. Here's to short albums!

Wagner's Ring Cycle, 14 disc box set, taking my time with this, two discs in and it's quite good. The end of disc two feels like an ending unto itslef and there's 12 discs to go...!

Posted - 07/21/2023 : 11:14:03 There must be an indie rock band factory in America somewhere churning out Gen Z bands playing stuff like the bands from the 90's these days
Momma - what a terrible name for a band
Household Name is a pretty decent album though - you can hear the Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth influences in there - remind me of Big Deal now split also from CA and they had a simirly feel-good grungy shoegaze summer vibe
Playing live they come across like an American High School band playing at their final year Prom but credit where due they seem to be writing some good tunes and they can play their instruments |

Posted - 07/04/2023 : 05:46:50 I really like the new Blur song St Charles Square - unusual for me to say something like that as I've always though they were a bit average
I'm getting kind of Trompe le Monde/Pixies vibes from it though ? Anyone else think that ? |
