I've had a few beers and I'm listening to some Golem tracks and some kickass videos posted by einzack on YouTube and it got me thinking - if BF were to ever resume playing his solo stuff live with a proper band what would you like to hear? Let's say you're offering him a shitload of money to play a select few songs (no more than ten) with a proper backing band (let's say Lyle is back but you can choose any guitarist from his history) and they're not going to phone it in. Frank will be pumped. FB/ToTY/CoR-era pumped. Sweat rolling off his glorious face pumped. This kind of pumped: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUaFQ1Qr5wc It will be half an hour or so of awesomeness.

You choose ten songs. Bear in mind Pixies will probably remain touring until they all die you probably shouldn't choose any Pixies songs. You're also bearing in mind you'll likely hear his own favourite songs like The Swimmer and Bullet anyway at some stage if Black is back touring as a solo artist. So you're probably thinking about some obscure B-side or long neglected self-titled track you'll never get to hear live again otherwise.

I won't choose my top ten yet but this lot springs to mind:
Custom All The Way
Kicked in the Taco
Don't Ya Rile 'Em
Threshold Apprehension

I was listening to some Miriam and Florian and the brilliant final part of the song got me thinking it's a bit similar to Parry The Wind High Low. They'd be some combination.

You can choose a more mellow set or a frantic one. I'm leaning towards the latter.

GO!

Ten songs off of a new album that's not out yet played solo acoustic.

I’m not saying any NSE songs would make my top twenty list however
Bedbug Posted - 04/03/2022 : 16:10:46
I like NSE. It’s a nice weird entry in the FBF canon.

I was just relistening to Nonstop this week. I really dislike that album and I was trying to figure out why. I still don't know. I think it's really badly produced, mainly.
The Maharal Posted - 04/03/2022 : 03:13:52
Maybe I'd include some NSE tracks since they either weren't played often live or not at all. Cinema Star and Corrina.

Be honest, you want to be there the first time he plays Kiss my Ring live
Troubles A Foot Posted - 03/30/2022 : 12:21:05
Honestly I just want to see Pistolero live with the Catholics. So bad.

I didn't put a lot of Bluefinger (one of my favorite albums) songs as I did happen to see a show where he did many of them. But otherwise it would have been a struggle keeping those off the list!
stuczuba Posted - 03/30/2022 : 05:31:06
I managed 10, ideally I'd need another 20 though..

Maybe not in this order:

Czar
Parry The Wind
Black Rider
Robert Onion
Threshold Apprehension
I Switched You
Six Sixty Six
The Happening
Bird Dream of the Olympus Mons
Hang Wire
Troubles A Foot Posted - 03/29/2022 : 22:10:42
Hello old thread. I didn't do this. I couldn't only do 10, so here's 15. I'm specifically thinking of songs that would especially move me were I to hear it live, as well as some of the most epic ones for the crowd to sing along to:

Space Is Gonna Do Me Good
Two Spaces
San Antonio TX
Smoke Up
So Hard To Make Things Out
Seven Fingers
When They Come To Murder Me
Oddball
You Never Heard About Me
Announcement
Living On Soul
Le Cigare Volante
Manitoba

bonus encore:
Man of Steel
Fields of Marigold

If I remember correctly, a studio version of this was recorded in Dallas when FB was on tour with his band of the time. Does anyone know if this ever saw the light of day? I'd really love to hear a full-band studio version of it.

That's how he should dress for every show.
The Maharal Posted - 07/31/2018 : 11:28:41
WOW! That's a song I always find hit or miss but that version ruddy bloody rocks! He's really going for it and it's not as tame as certain other versions. Man I miss Fingers-era BF having fun with a harmonica. I would have seen that sort of rendition live in Vicar Street but barely remember it.

That's 3 of us now with Fazer Eyes on the top ten list, a song that has not much history to go on other than it's on the greatest album he ever did.

Let's keep the faith that we'll see it some day

Great topic, and glad you like my youtube vids...

My list is what songs I'd pay large amounts of imaginary money to see performed live in such a setting.
I've picked mine based on my favourite live tracks plus some that I'd love to hear played live.
Restricted myself to FB and FB&TC's tracks as performed in those incarnations. So no BF.
Upon reviewing my list, I see that I like the rockin' ones!!

Anyways, here's are my 10 songs.
The Marsist
Freedom Rock
Pong / Thalassocracy
So Hard To Make Things Out
I Need Peace
Bullet
Massif Centrale
So. Bay
Encore:
Big Red (solo electric)
Gouge Away

As usual, I went a step further and put together a playlist of some of favourite live versions of said songs.
Here it is if anyone else wants to hear my set pretty much as I'd want to hear it: https://mega.nz/#F!o5xSiLQQ!TfV_1BUH3YkC6jS0xnF0cA

Reminds me of Kristin Hersh's 10-4 concept where you paid her $50 and she recorded 10 songs from her back catalogue. You chose the 10 songs.
Unfortunately that concept got a way from her a little. Some great recordings came out of it though.....

all i can say, thank god for polio! brian

Ten songs that I haven't seen Frank Black perform live

Pan American Highway, Places Named After Numbers, Fields of Marigold, I Will Run After You, Pollys' Into Me, Don't Ya Rile 'Em, Everything Is New, I Don't Want To Hurt You (Every Single Time), Cinema Star, The Last Stand of Shazeb Andleeb
Bedbug Posted - 06/11/2018 : 10:40:34
Is this thread about what we want to experience live or just about ten songs of his that we love?

I added Don't Get Me Wrong, but I'm doubtful a live version will outdo the beauty of the studio version. Then again, to hear DGMW live would be unprecedented.

I'm updating my list as follows:

Dancing the Manta Ray
Motorway to Roswell
Fazer Eyes
Announcement
Boom Chica Boom
Don't Get Me Wrong
Bad News
Black Suit
Czar
Dog in the Sand

I dreamed about this last night, and am adding these songs:

Boom Chica boom
Don’t get me wrong

Can we add covers we’d like him to do?

Pan American Highway
Fu Manchu
Tossed
Adventure & Resolution
Announcement
Robert Onion
TMBG - Road Movie to Berlin cover
Tight Black Rubber
King & Queen of Siam
Fields of Marigold

BOOM!
Bedbug Posted - 06/09/2018 : 15:33:04
4) would be ANNOUNCEMENT

So my list so far is

DANCING THE MANTA RAY (or Velvety, or Tossed into Parry)
MOTORWAY TO ROSWELL
FAZER EYES
ANNOUNCEMENT
Bedbug Posted - 06/09/2018 : 15:30:10
As I continue to think about this, I would want the opener to be either

DANCING THE MANTA RAY

or

VELVETY INSTRUMENTAL

I think those are the two best songs to open with, other than Bone Machine (from a Pixies perspective).

Dancing the Manta Ray just gets you pumped as you hear it while at the same time setting the stage for a lot more meaty songs to come.

Velvety Instrumental was what they opened with when I saw them in 92, and I've never forgotten how sick it was. I hadn't even heard it before.

BUT!

I would sub out Velvety for:

TOSSED INSTRUMENTAL, provided it could segue right into:

PARRY THE WIND HIGH LOW.

So, therefore, I'm looking at:

1) Dancing the Manta Ray, but if not then Velvety, but if neither of those two then Tossed / Parry combo
2) Motorway to Roswell (provided that EDF was on keys)
3) Fazer Eyes
4-10 still deciding
peter radiator Posted - 06/09/2018 : 09:21:35
I don't know why you'd want to limit this to only 10 or fewer songs, especially if the notion is some private, personally commissioned gig!

So, I'm gonna ignore that and make a list of 20 songs.

Since this is clearly cheating, anyone can feel free to simply ignore any 10 of my selections and consider whatever's left as my official answer.

:)

This was VERY tough, but I guess in keeping with your suggestion to avoid tunes Charles occasionally pulls out on his own - and to make these requests somewhat challenging for FBF and Co., here's what I would ask for, in no particular order of importance:

1. TIGHT BLACK RUBBER
2. MAN OF STEEL
3. DEAD MAN'S CURVE
4. MY LIFE IS IN STORAGE
5. WHATEVER HAPPENED TO PONG / THALLASOCRACY (it really should count as one!)
6. JANE, THE QUEEN OF LOVE
7. YOUR MOUTH INTO MINE
8. CUSTOM ALL THE WAY
9. HUMBOLDT COUNTY MASSACRE
10. PRAY A LITTLE FASTER
11. (DO WHAT YOU WANT) GYANESHWAR
12. SUPERABOUND
13. MASSIF CENTRALE
14. I WANT ROCK & ROLL
15. SHE'S MY WAY
16. DON'T YA RILE 'EM
17. HOW YOU WENT SO FAR
18. YOU AIN'T ME
19. FAZER EYES
20. PRAY FOR THE GIRLS

Encore: RAIDERMAN (solo) followed by FAST MAN (full band)

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Band: any solo lineup is great but for this manic set list I'd go for this band (switching where necessary);

Nick Vincent - drums
EDF - Bass/keys
Lyle Workman/Joey Santiago/Rich Gilbert - Lead Guitar

I would sign for this set list.

And of course, if it’s a full proper band then we know EDF is there on keys, so we gotta hear the best ever live version of:

MOTORWAY TO ROSWELL
Bedbug Posted - 06/09/2018 : 01:42:43
This is a tough question.

I’ll try to get to the full ten eventually, but for right now all I will say is the first one to come to mind is:

FAZER EYES

I'm having a few beers as well and I picked up a nice single malt for only £16 a bottle! That's about how much it costs for a bottle of cheap, caramel cellophane wrapped bottled shite thanks to the Min Alco-P thing. Before I crack that open (or hopefully talk myself out of that) I'm drinking a few bottles of brooklyn Lager. You merkins like your bitter hops! Most Scottish lagers have neard heard of what a hop is.

Anyway. I like things like this, so I had a think and initially I have to say I already feel that I've seen the ultimate FB half hour, or even longer. On the FBF tour in 2007.

An hour of him jumping around the stage like his head was about to explode, in the summer in my favourite venue of all time Doornroosje in Nijmegen (which has since moved to a new and bigger venue so probably not the same anymore but still a cool venue)

I'll think about it anyway.

If it's to be half an hour of frantic then I'd say pretty much any song of his performed frantically would do for me as long as Charles Normal and Jason Carter are in the band.
