So, let's compile the current rumors

- According to some interviews (often Paz), a new album is in the works
- Someone on this forum supposedly heard that the Rockfield studios in england have been booked in early 2018
- Charles said to some journalist last year that he'd like his next record to be produced by both Dalgery and Norton

As for the songs, nothing new on the BMI catalog, but there's still many unreleased "new" songs in the list. We already know some of them as official/unofficial demos/raw versions or short live snippets (Super Lecker), but not all of them.

ALICE PRIN 14843364
BANKS OF THE DRAIN 14843409
LAND OF GREEN 14843908

O LITTLE CLOUD 14844131
PICKEREL PICKER 14844189
RATS ALIVE 14844230
TRANQUILIZE ME 14844508

It was posted on IG April 4th, I remember posting the link in the Guncotton thread. What's the date on the recent post?

Charles has been posting lots of mad, fun videos on Instragram. One of them featured a man flicking through a book - 'Guncotton' featured as did some French lyrics. Don't think it signifies a new album but maybe we'll get the actual Guncotton film some day.

You work at Rockfield Wilson?
Bedbug Posted - 06/26/2018 : 07:40:11
Oh Wilson, since youíre back, do you have insight into whether there were any b-sides recorded during HC?

Iím sure you were asked before but I canít remember.

Thanks
Bedbug Posted - 06/26/2018 : 06:58:49
Thanks Wilson!

This is excellent news, especially in light of the fact that no new material has been played to date on the summer tour.

Wilson, you rock. Thanks for this tidbit, I was starting to worry they aborted mission on a new record even with all the clues from the first few months of the year that we saw. Glad to hear something is happening. Also happy to see you are still willing to check in here and throw us a bone, haha.

Thanks for you input peter.

For my part i'm praying for a good old Norton mix with a normal, non-retarded mastering.

Can we draft an open letter from the forum to the band?
peter radiator Posted - 06/18/2018 : 07:23:42
Regardless of whether or not some may feel that falling back on working with Gil Norton was too much of an exercise in familiarity, there's no getting around the fact that IC sounds like a record produced with great care and intense effort by someone who TRULY understands the band.

On the other hand, while the HC songs are clearly honed and rehearsed in pre-production to extremely tight, almost road-tested condition and there is a certain naive charm about the way these songs are sonically represented on the album, the record itself sounds (unsurprisingly) like it was produced in a fairly perfunctory / haphazard fashion by a guy who's used to working with metal bands but who PERSONALLY digs the Pixies and was looking for a change of pace in his career arc.

To me, it was neither slick enough to give me the shiny sci-fi vibe I know the band is easily capable of (and which was evident in spades on IC), nor stir-fried enough to result in the kind of raw, unvarnished intensity of the pre-Norton records or the early radio broadcasts many understandably salivate over.

So, it was stuck in some sort of limbo which I feel kept many of the performances from achieving that certain timeless quality the band has often conjured (although I do find MUCH to like about HC).

Honestly, I would LOVE to hear a full-on Pixies album recorded live-in-the-studio (but to multi-track, to allow for plenty of mixing and effects options later) at the newly reopened Sound City, where the eponymous FB & The C's and Pistoleros LPs were cut.

Just think for a minute about hearing Dave's drums with the same sort of thundering, analog room sound as on Scott Boutier's kit on those records, the slash and burn of FBF and Joey's amps cranked up to 11, and that dry-ish, in-your-face vocal presence from both FBF and Paz.

It would be the sound of those particular people on their comfortable stage gear in a great, warm-sounding space, with plenty of dynamic range on fat, plastic tape.

Just my .02, for whatever that may be worth.

I tried again listening to this Planet of Sound podcast (last episode "life after the Pixies"), and they briefly talked about 2.0 production issues.

Their opinion was: well, Indie Cindy has a poor post-production, but HC sounds better and is going in the right direction.

Well, I have the exact opposite opinion. If you listen carefully, you can tell Indie Cindy is mixed in a nice way (it is Gil Norton after all), then things went bad at the mastering stage for whatever reason. For HC however, I think it's obvious that the whole thing has a retarded production from start to finish because it was just made to sound that way. At least that's how I hear it.

Listen to live versions or take zen lessons and just accept it.

And pray one day some un-mastered tracks will eventually find their way. They exist somewhere (and nobody cares but 5 geeks on an empty Frank Black message board).

Meanwhile, I listen to the 2nd Grand Duchy album. Sounds great.

I agree with you on all of this.

Maybe someday un-mastered tracks will be all the rage and the band can cash in by selling them to you and me.

Yes, 2nd Grand Duchy album sounds great. I miss albums that sound great.

I agree, QuaBear, that the energy is not re-capture-able. As we've said on other threads, most fans today are probably fans because of what was done during 1.0 not 2.0.

Having said that, I think FB and the team are doing an amazing job with the 2.0 live performances. And the songs on the two albums are, for the most part, cool.

It's the production of the forthcoming album that I'm hoping will be different. I'm not expecting the energy, vocals, instruments, or anything else to sound like the Boston Broadcast performance or like Surfer Rosa. But there is a way to make the new album a better listen than IC and HC on the studio side. That's what I'm hoping for.

Even if he's going to play Violet on the new album, it should sound like he's playing Violet in my bedroom, not behind a wall of muff.

Yeh Bedbug...this is a superb performance...I don't know if the Pixies can ever capture that type of urgency anymore...just listening to that, I remember why I fell in love with the Pixies in the first place...there's just a sense of incredible fun in the Pixies
Bedbug Posted - 06/11/2018 : 05:02:12
Was just listening to Pixies the Boston Broadcast 1987.

If they could somehow have some kind of album that could sound something like this it would be beyond anyoneís expectations.

And Iím just talking about the production, I get that itís 30 years later and vocal chords and energy levels have changed.

But this is the best thing youíll ever hear, and itís super stripped down / basic sounding.

I canít believe itís only got like 40K views on YouTube.

Itís got the best Down To the Well ever, and how about that Subbacultcha / D=RxT mashup.

But again my point is the production, the sound.

Pray for the Pixies. We donít need Compressd Pixies.

yes briefly in another thread i think.

I tried to listen to the second episode... I don't think I'll go to the next one. Lame jokes and one of the hosts burping repeatedely was so irritating. And no real interesting trivia that wasn't in the usual Pixies books. I think I'll pass for now.

Yeah, it's a very different podcast than what Brian and Dean gave us, it's more loose. The later episodes get into more specifics about each album, the first was a bit of an intro. Different, but not bad.

Ah, cool. I forgot about this podcast. Need to catch up newest episodes. I remember listening to the first one and they were especially talkin about their own story and feelings with the band. I expected more behind the scenes or trivia about the band. But they were just starting off. Nice to see BF interacting with them.

It seems he'd post a painting every day or two for awhile. He doesn't post anything besides that though. However, I have seen him comment of that Planet of Sound Podcast IG account every so often. Which is cool, we at least see him interacting with fans/commenting on stuff related to Pixies every so often.

While I admit Indie Cindy isn't up to par with previous records, I really like Head Carrier and think it's a big step in the right direction. I'm excited for the new album. They've gone through an entire album and tour cycle with Paz, the live shows are better than ever at the moment in my opinion, and the band in general just seems to be in a good spot. Looking forward to what comes next.
