Just learned that there is a James Joyce story called “A Little Cloud.” Many clouds referenced in the Bible , especially in the writings of John the Revelator.

And what did they all mean?

I'm not sure I can say.

The phrase "a little cloud, the size of a man's hand" is in one of the Elijah stories, and it's possible Charles would have heard some sermonizing on that in his neo-Pentecostal upbringing (along with words like "repent.")

I'd like to see Leonard Cohen or Nick Cave cover this one.

Ah, you're thinking of Little Empty Boat. Can't think of too many songwriters that have written about impotence. Just Nick and Frank. I've Been Tired. That's about impotence, right?

I surmise it has more to do with the opposite, overactivity. That's what would make you "feel like Solomon." Through in Bathsheba ("she raised me") for the incestuous side. Best left unsolved really.

It's still one of my favourites. It's always popping up as my 'Up Next' selection on YouTube and it's very hard to resist playing it.

That's BF performing the haunting "ba-ba-ba"s at the end right? For some reason I originally thought they might have been Jeremy Dubs'.

So I never really listened to this song much over the years but while driving home on a long long drive I put this on and damn...what a great song.
Bedbug Posted - 08/09/2019 : 02:07:18
I continue to hold out hope we will hear a worthy release of this great tune
trobrianders Posted - 08/08/2019 : 15:20:40
Still the last Frank song I really loved. What's it been? 5 years?

Still holding the number one spot in my wishlist for the new album.
Bedbug Posted - 03/27/2018 : 00:43:21
Still keeping the faith for this one. Hoping we get a worthy version on the third offering from 2.0.

Ooh that's cheered me up Maharal no end!

As for O Little Cloud, in a way, I half-think it's better if it's left like it is now. A brilliantly raw demo track.

I agree. I wish all the IC / HC production sounded more like this. By "good version" I guess I mean pretty much the same as it is but on a new FBF solo album with 13 other cool songs.

I'm a bit disappointed that we hadn't any Bsides appear from the HC sessions. Was hoping this one was going to appear but sadly not yet.
Bedbug Posted - 09/18/2017 : 06:41:47
Keeping the candle lit that the man will give us a good version of this soon. I lost my demo of it somewhere. I really love this song.
Bedbug Posted - 03/05/2017 : 09:23:02
Agree with most everything Sdon, Arm Arm Arm, and Fitzy are saying. It would be sad to hear a ruined (meaning IC / HC production) version of this, so I suppose I will be happy with what I've got.

To me it sounds like it could be on Oddballs volume two, not that it sounds like it's from that era, but that it's just him being himself in a way that I feel we don't see as often anymore.

I like O Little Cloud demo better than the entirety of IC / HC, though both of those have great moments.

Yes Fitzy, creepy surfy fbf would be an awesome album, especially if it could not be ruined in production.
Fitzy Posted - 03/05/2017 : 03:03:04
It's one of my favorite songs he's come up with in these last few years. It's a great song, and I adore the stripped down recording, what he's doing with his guitar, something that would probably be lost in a full group version, so there's that.

I hate the idea of not "sounding" like a Pixies song, so it won't be released. To almost all the world, nothing they do now is going to sound like the 1.0 Pixies. Or if it does, it wont be as good. So trying not to make any sudden moves left or right, just a steady two year album release with good enough Pixies-sounding songs to keep the Pixies tour train machine moving is kind of disheartening.

Arm Arm Arm is right about the wah wahs stuff sounding like 50s or maybe 60s sounding songs. Creepy Surf music. How cool would it be to have a Pixies album full of this stuff?

I feel the wah wahs could be BF singing a line supposed to be played on guitar (like he often did on FBF demos)

That's what I thought he was doing at first, but maybe it's just a vocal part during the outro, something different. Good song though!

I can very much hear it as a Pixies song (intro kinda reminds me of Brick is Red, Santo...)

"Pixies enough" shouldn't be a standard but I understand why that could be, both for some listeners and the band.

It's a detrimental mindset for the musicians, to have this shadow looming.

I guess to a certain degree Frank could be used to it since the Pixies overshadowed his solo and Catholics albums in much of the press and public eye, but back then he was staking out new ground for himself, THIS AINT' THE PIXIES! BLACK FRANCIS IS NOW FRANK BLACK! which is different than returning to the Pixies moniker and bandmates.

Who knows? It really doesn't matter. As with most rock bands, the majority are there for the "hits" and the hardcore are there for new songs and rarely played tunes and for most people, the Pixies are like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Who cares about the new stuff, play Monkey!

I don't expect Pixies 2 to release albums as great as the originals. But the man is a genius songwriter and will keep releasing good tunes of which I think O Little Cloud is one of them overall.

Indie Cindy and Head-Carrier feel more like Frank has a new band, which in some ways they are with a new bassist/singer and the distance of space and time for both Joey and Dave.

cheers

It's a really good song, feels like something the Catholics would've recorded. The wah wahh part makes it feel like a 50s song. I should give it a couple listens before deciding about that part but for now, I don't care for it.

cheers

My fiirst post of 2017 is to say O Little Cloud is awesome.
The Maharal Posted - 10/28/2016 : 13:32:08
Yeah definitely O Little Cloud. Dunno if they can top the demo for me - one of my favourite songs.
Stevio10 Posted - 10/28/2016 : 03:33:01
BF's latest Instagram post is a 7 second video clip with music accompanied that sure sounds like Cloud (I presume) by Pixies
Bedbug Posted - 09/30/2016 : 02:46:46
I recorded this on my iPhone voice memo app. The poor quality adds to the experience. This is a great song. If he's only doing non-solo stuff from now on maybe we can hope for a version of this on the next album.

Also would be cool to hear him / them try out new material live like he often used to do.
Sam Posted - 04/28/2015 : 00:57:48
I love this one - sounds like bluefinger era FB. It is great. Love the guitar in it. I hope it gets the full production.
McDutchie Posted - 11/05/2014 : 05:01:05
Thanks, BunsenH. I've now listened to another version (the 16th October performance) and that does seem to be what he sings.

One more thing: "Like somewhere clean" (second to last line) should probably be "Like somewhere to dream".
BunsenH Posted - 11/05/2014 : 03:30:45
Here's my attempt:

O little cloud
Don't follow me
If I slow down
Keep my head down
Would you leave me be

I had this car
Like twenty years
The pedal stuck
It would not stop
Till I [jammed the gears]

We pan around
Like hand and glove
We have our trust
Then we combust
And destroy our love

O river flood
Would you let me out
Someplace downstream
Like somewhere clean
In a [time of drought]

O little cloud

Would you leave me be

I had this car
Like twenty years
The pedal stuck
It would not stop
Till I [???] jammed the gears

We pan around
Like hand and glove
We have our trust
Then we combust
And destroy our love

O river flood
Would you let me out
Someplace downstream
Like somewhere clean to dream
In a [???] time of drought
