I've been listening to Dub Side of the Moon lately (it's an entire album covering Dark Side of the Moon dub reggae style) - sounds like the worst idea imaginable but it works in a startlingly good way.

Anyway - got me thinking of favourite cover versions - there are some frightenly bad ones out there and then there are some that have become classics in their own right like All Along the Watchtower - in my mind that is now a Hendrix song and in no way a Dylan song. Hurt - Johnny Cash is another, I still love the NIN version, but Cash pretty much claimed that as his own. And of course there's Winterlong, Head On - Pixies & Happiness Is a Warm Gun - The Breeders.

There are loads of others that I can't think of now - but figured this would be a way to find a couple of new versions of songs by draining you of all your wonderous musical knowledge.

Blinded by the Light (Bruce Springsteen) - Manfred Mann's Earth Band
Emily (Hot Chocolate) - The Sisters of Mercy
Transmission (Joy Division) - Low
The Man Who Sold the World (David Bowie) - Lulu/Nirvana
I Think I Love You (The Partridge Family) - The Voice of the Beehive
Mr Tambourine Man (Dylan) - The Byrds
Statesboro Blues (Willie McTell) - The Allman Brothers Band

Heard Nilsson's 'Without You' today and thought of this thread. I do like the original too, which I hadn't actually heard until last year, but I think in general this version is more well known now. And it is really, really good.

My personal favourite is probably 'Hallelujah' by Jeff Buckley. Already mentioned by a few here and rightly so. So much atmosphere and emotion in that recording.

Also a mention to FB himself for 'Some Things (I Can't Get Used To)'. I hadn't heard the original until lately but Franky B and the C's really do it justice. Whether it's actually better... I don't know. Tough one. Definitely one of my favourite covers though.

There must be some great covers of Sister Ray out there. Not only indie guitar but maybe electronic as well. Please post links if you know of any. No Joy Division thanks.

...and that reminds me of the Repo Man soundtrack released a year or 2 ago. some decent covers on that one. the Institutionalized cover by Amanda Palmer and Grand Theft Orchestra has really grown on me. And Let's Start A War by Mike Watt and The Secondmen was quite good from the first time i heard it.

White Light/White Heat - from the 'Lawless' soundtrack by The Bootleggers featuring Mark Lanegan. Soundtrack in general is very good, kudos to Nick Cave.

I heard the Throwing Muses version of 'Manic Depression' recently - very clever choice of song given Kristin's history. Even cleverer with no vocals maybe?

Glad you agree.

If it is to choose the best cover, I must also agree that Ziggy Stardust by the Bauhaus is the best.
I remember that when I was younger I was so obsessed with it that I had a tape all recorded with the Bowie one and the Bauhaus, it was a bit crazy, but I used to listen to it just like that.
