For me, Shady, John Frum, Silver Boys, and Dark Sparkles and the Beat are the only keepers on this album. I really got my hopes up for Esther, thinking it would progress into something more fleshed out sonically.

So what's next on the horizon for Frank Black?

I don't mind the DJ shit, it gives the album some continuity. It all comes at the end of each track though so easy to skip once you've heard them several times and got bored with it.

I think Geode was produced by Charles Normal, at least that is what I can gather from what violet said on facebook today.

EDIT- must correct what I said there, it wasn't produced by Charles Normal- he plays guitar on Geode and White Out.

I should add, I think its a more interesting album than Petits Fours.

* UPDATED AFTER FURTHER LISTENS.

I was too harsh in my initial thoughts, its a fun album. Still, shame about the DJ stuff and See-thru you.

1. The Lopsided World of L
N/A
2. See-Thru You **
(Dislike this song... Republica comparisons apt in this case. Shame it leads the album off poorly. )
3. White Out ***
(interested who played the ending lead guitar)
4. Where is John Frum? ***
(a grower)
5. Geode ***1/2
(solid song, weighed down by the electronics. Cool surfy guitar. Bowie-esque when it gets going.)
6. Shady ****
(could be off Oddballs. That's a good thing.)
7. Annie Bliss ***
(another grower. Like the organ.)
8. Dark Sparkles and The Beat ****
(Violet's best effort. Actually pretty great song.)
9. Two Lies and one truth **1/2
10. Silver boys ***1/2
(guilty pleasure)
11. Illiterate Lovers ***
12. Face ***
13. Esther ***
(interesting FB track, experimental)
14. Rote **1/2
15. Let The People Speak ***
(another guilty pleasure, but more so.)

overall ***
