Parody star's parents die in Fallbrook
By: JO MORELAND - Staff Writer

FALLBROOK ---- The elderly parents of parody recording star "Weird Al" Yankovic were found dead of apparent carbon monoxide poisoning Friday in their modest Fallbrook home.

An investigator from the county medical examiner's office identified the couple as Nick and Mary Yankovic and said they lived in the house at 226 Foxfire Lane.

A blaze had been in a fireplace in the hillside house when three family members discovered the couple about 1 p.m., said sheriff's Sgt. Conrad Grayson, a fire investigator.

"The house was full of smoke when they opened the door," Grayson said. "We examined the fireplace. They were burning wood. They (family) had found the flue closed. They opened it."

Shocked neighbors on the rural one-block street on a green hillside described the Yankovics as "sweethearts," nice people who were proud of their son.

"Everybody who came to the neighborhood knew Nick," said John Buehman, who lives across the street. "They're going to be missed, big time."

Attempts to reach "Weird Al" Yankovic through his New York-based booking agency, BookingEntertainment.com, Friday were unsuccessful. The winner of the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album in 2003 for his Poodle Hat album was scheduled to appear in Appleton, Wis., on Friday as part of the tour for the album.

I can't imagine how devestating this must be for Al; his parents were a huge part of his life.

Did you mean it to be good?

Ah, just pulling your leg... (but really, it's bad)

I listened to both tribute albums yesterday, including b-sides. Some of them were a bit hard to swallow but there's some great stuff on both.

I had exactly the same thought this afternoon when listening to Asterid's "His Kingky Cave".

Heh, you've been talking to Andy/TenPercenter?

And just for the record, we actually didn't mean for the cover to be funny.

sadly, weird al's parents still dead...

on the upside - he toured extensively during 2007 and 2008 in support of his 2006 album "straight outta lynnwood"!

Whoa! For a second I thought I was losing it as I clearly remembered this post. Didn't this all ready happen?, I thought.

I remember roughly around the same time David Lynch's parents were killed in an automobile accident.

Maybe I've just lost my sense of humour over the years.

this is really tragic. horrible, in this situation, what the press can do. I hope they do leave him alone.

I think he just did, or was about to play my town. I expect he'll be cancelling at least a few shows. Hopefully more for his sake. There'll probably be a few disappointed fans but I'm sure they'll understand.

I wonder if Al will switch over to a darker brand of humor..?

At least they died together, that's kind of sweet in a way

I'm sure he will and I hope he does but it makes you wonder. They were old though (not that it isn't still a shock) and probably not as heart wrenching as, say, Cosby's son. Not as tragic anyhow.

There's no doubt in my mind that Al would ever give up on his comedy and music due to these events. His parents were his biggest fans, so he's sure to play on in memory of them.

That's terrible. Does anyone wonder when something like this happens if the comedian will be able to recover and do comedy again? Like when Bill Cosby's son was murdered. I saw him live after that and that was all I could think about while the man was telling jokes. Why do I dwell on these things? I'm terrible.

How awful, he might find out (or have found out) from the press too.
Not the best way for news of this nature to be broken.

It's getting colder....

Really horrible, I discovered Weird Al with "Like a surgeon", when I was like twelve or so. This is tragic.

Cult_Of_Frank Posted - 04/10/2004 : 14:09:11
That is horrible, really horrible. I hope the press just leaves him alone to try to come to grips with it, but I don't foresee that happening.
