Watch. It'll be a hit, get tons of radio play, and the radiosheep will think it's Hammond's baby. Once people learn it's a cover, they'll say "really? Well it's better than the original". Like when G&R covered LIVE AND LET DIE. I knew so many people who had no clue it was a McCartney song...and once they found out, they said McCartney's recording was terrible. YYuuccckkk! G&R?! Come on!

ALBERT HAMMOND JR. COVERS FRANK BLACK
Writer: Mark Krotov
News, Published online on 10 Aug 2007

In the recent past, The Strokes have paid homage to Tom Petty,
appeared in a video with Guided By Voices, and performed with
Eddie Vedder. In what amounts to a continuing quest to honor
legendary Older Dudes of Rock, Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond
Jr. has recorded a cover of Pixies frontman Frank Black’s “Old Black
Drawing.”

Hammond’s cover, which was recorded live at New York’s Bowery
Balloom, will appear as a b-side for his new single, “In Transit.” The
song appears on his solo album, Yours To Keep, and the single also
features a video for “In Transit,” directed by "Johnny Cash" himself,
Joaquin Phoenix. The single will be available for download in the UK
on September 3, with other territories to follow.

I think that is so awesome. I always thought "Old Black Dawning" was an amazing song. I'm glad its finally getting its proper recognition. Now somebody just needs to cover "Calistan" and "I Heard Ramona Sing".

Three covers. "Postal Blowfish" is a Guided by Voices song.

Hammond confident on his own

Albert Hammond Jr. has insisted solo life would not threaten sunny days with the breadwinner
(so far) of his musical career.

But judging by his show May 24 at Martini Ranch in Scottsdale, Hammond appeared just as
comfortable - maybe more so - in a lead role as he does playing best man to Julian Casablancas
in the Strokes. (Is a recent report of the Strokes laying low in 2007 just coincidence?)

Even if the Strokes give him brand recognition, Hammond proved he does not necessarily need
it. He and his backing band - three guitars deep - ripped through a brisk, 50-minute set. With
just an album's worth of material - his debut, Yours To Keep - Hammond tossed in two covers to
flesh things out - Old Black Dawning by former Pixies frontman Frank Black and Don't Cha Stop by
the Cars.

Sorry, no Strokes songs.

Thanks for putting this up, Holiday Son.

I think it's great to be hearing FB covers, not just Pixies. What I find a bit odd about this one is how faithfully true to the original it is. Granted, I'd probably bitch if he'd altered it much and made it it his own, but I'm wondering what's the point in covering something if it's just going to sound like what already out there. Still, cheers to anybody who spreads FB's music to new audiences.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

I am new to FB but Hammond did a great job with the song.

I bet this was the lead guitarists choice of cover just so he could play the amazing solo.
Not bad, Hammond.
Not bad at all.

(thanks for that, son)

Yeah, thanks for that. I heard a song of this guy on the radio a few weeks ago and thought it was half decent, though I'm not too bothered about The Strokes.

As for the Old Black Dawning cover, I think it's fair good. It doesn't differ much to the original.
