Quite brief, mostly positive.

*** (out of five)

"Pixies frontman comes over all twangy"

Recorded last spring, just days before launching the re-formed Pixies tour, Honeycomb dishes up a very different side of Frank Black. Surrounding himself with some of Nashville's finest musicians, it's essentially a mournful country record, with Black in reflective, middle-aged mode. Consequently, there are no songs about UFOs or monkeys, and it's difficult to believe that this most tender of voices is the very same one that all those years ago growled Planet of Sound with such aggression. His mutation into Hank Williams may be unlikely, but it also proves to be rather charming. (Nick Duerden).

Thanks for posting. But, yeah, what's with the low stars!

To be honest, I don't have a problem with that review.... it does at least sound like he listened to the album a fair bit. The SMYT critique kinda reeked of "I've listened to it just the once", and the kiss-off line that "Kim Deal must be pissing herself laughing" looked like one thought of before even checking the record out.

Q is trying to change a bit (you're right about the "2 or 3 stars" thing, although DITS and Frank Black got four), but on the whole I do prefer Uncut, if only because they once published a letter of mine ;-)

Not even Homer's Pet Monkey?

I remember they gave Show Me Your Tears 2 stars, particularly ripping into
"My Favourite Kiss."

Q annoys the hell out of me! Most FB albums get 2 or 3 stars in Q. The magazine I trust most with reviews is Uncut, they have the balls to give Oasis' new album 2 stars outta 5 while Q is givng them 4. Q used to be good, but I think it panders to the mainstream gossip and youth rather than absolute quality of music, which I believe Uncut is superlative for. Either that or im getting old.

Thanks! Does anyone remember how many stars they gave Show Me Your Tears?
