They're being moved to Washington.

Anyone see a trend here?

Montreal had plenty of opportunities to support the Expos, but they didn't. Even when they Expos were making a post season attempt last year, the attendance was dismal. By contrast, I remember seeing the Cleveland Indians a lot when I was a kid and there'd be 70,000 people there even when the team was dead last.

I think the Blue Jays will be around for a long time. They at least have a winning history and make moves to compete each year. Unfortunatly for them, they happen to be in the same division as the Yankees and Red Sox who can always out spend them.

(Go Red Sox)

go jets!!

i saw their last game against the detroit red wings about 10 years ago. very sad day.

but to tell you the truth it's a totally different sports environment these days and i don't really care for it much. i was fortunate enough to see a quarter final game of the world cup of hockey in sept. out in toronto. canada against the slovaks. they had 6 different ticket prices- $50, $100, $250, $350, $450, $650. no shit. $650 for one game- face value. and the majority of the people in the stands were in suits- mainly corporate seats. didn't see too many kids. ya, what about the kids??

I'd rather have the Raptors

I'm pissed they didn't come to Virginia, as was a possiblity. Do you know how many professional sports teams are in Virginia, includind Football, Soccer, Hockey, Baseball, and Basketball?

Zero.

We need at least one team... fucking bullshit I say!

D.C. now has all 5, (which all tend to suck!), thanks for NOT sharing once again!

Jackie Robinson played on a minor league team in Montreal before being called up to Brooklyn. So, there is pretty long history of baseball in Montreal.

I went to a few AAA games this summer (in Sacramento and Portland) and they were fun. The prices weren't much less than major league games (a good beer still costs around $5) but the seats were good and the games were well played. But, I've never had a bad time at a baseball game.

You won't get much sympathy from an erstwhile Baltimore Colts fan. Most sports franchise owners have loyalty only to the dollar. Look at how many of them are lawyers, for crying out loud.

My mom's entire side of the family is from there,
so I too remember them quite clearly, sorry.

That Jets thing might be a bit of a sore spot for some people on the board.

"If I was [NHL commissioner] Gary Bettman, I'd be worried about my family, about my well-being right now," Chelios told the press last Wednesday. "Some crazed fan or even a player, who knows, might take it into his own hands and figure that if they get him out of the way this might get settled." (actually about the previous NHL labour dispute)

I heard just last week that there are legal issues still pending between the former minority owners, the previous owner and MLB that could block any move.

Expect demoralization.

Yeah, much as I do hate losing things continually to US dollars, if there's nobody out to support the team, which in turn means no money for the team, which means less support, etc, then I can't really feel bad that they're being lost. I think that maybe Canadians just aren't as willing to spend the kind of money on seeing sports live that Americans are. Because it's not like Montreal is a small centre or anything. So what's the problem, exactly?

Now there are plenty of well-supported hockey teams we've lost to the US, but don't get me started on the National Hockey League.

I know I know,
I meant it more like an overall trend in not being able to keep anything Canadian here anymore, to go along with other topics I posted.

It is a crappy stadium, they're spending 400 million in Washington for a new one. It was funny because the news said that Quebec couldn't afford to build one and I thought, not even with the 4.2 billion dollars Alberta gave them last year????....hehe.

Yeah I agree... I mean in Toronto they were practically giving away Bluejay tickets. It's like an when the Fair comes to town. "Step right up!"
darwin Posted - 09/30/2004 : 09:53:54
Trend? Canadians don't really support baseball teams? The Expos played in a terrible stadium for about 30 years?

Major League Baseball makes alot of mistakes and the past two years of the Expos being owned by MLB is a good example, but Montreal has not supported the Expos since the mid 80s. Crowds of about 4000 spectators have been common, so why should the team stay in Montreal?
