Conan blows Leno away, and this proves it.

In five years HBO will have hardcore porn to replace the Sopranos, the networks will be as...well I've seen the future of TV, and I like it. And Canadian television will still generally suck

Posted - 10/03/2004 : 16:42:50 I saw a minute or two of Leno a few days ago, and he made a joke that I thought was offensive to Arabs. The thing is, I don't know that I would have found it offensive if someone else had made it, but I kind of get the idea that Jay really IS prejudiced.

Posted - 09/30/2004 : 22:33:32 Letterman was, what Conan has only improved. Huh? What the fuck does that mean?
Letterman used to have the funny weirdness, the great music. Conan took that opening when Letterman went mainstream. I see the same happening to Conan.
Does anyone find Leno to be racist at all? I don't watch him much these days(never have really) but I've found him to make some very uncomfortable remarks when I have watched.

Posted - 09/29/2004 : 19:22:54 My mistake; I got the two shows mixed up. I saw the Late Show with David Letterman. I guess that's why they picked Bill Murray to do the first ep of the new show.

I remember seeing the first few episodes of Late Night with David Letterman, back in like, '93 or '94, and he had a really cool show. The very first one, I remember, featured Bill Murray, always a plus. A few episodes later he had Drew Barrymore (Mad Love-era Drew, wild and reckless) and she showed him her breasts on the show. (Also a definite plus.)
Late Night with David Letterman started back around 1982 and the first guest was Bill Murray. The Late Show with David Letterman started in 1993 and Murray was again the first guest. There was also a short lived morning show before Late Night.
The old show (Late Night) was much more irreverant and had more comedy bits than the new show (better musically guests too, but Tom Waits was on last night). Which, like floop is suggesting, is probably what will happen to Conan when he moves up an hour. |

I definetly prefer Dave. He's just so snarky and crabby and RANDOM compared to the way that Leno is cloying and a suck up.
Conan is fabulous and adorable. I think anything would be an improvement over Jay and I hope he keeps his sarcastic left of center style.

I think moving the show to CA will work even better because Conan will seem even more ridiculous when he's out on LA streets next to bronzed bombshells. I hope he maintains his musical guest preferences and doesn't start getting shit music like Leno gets. If I see Beyonce on Conan I think I'll barf.

that's just it. because of the timeslot, and the nimrod audience Leno has built up for himself.. i see the network forcing him to way tone down his show.
his show is great because it's weird, and NOT necessairly accessible to everyone. in that slot, you've got to be accessible.
i'm sure he can pull it off and still make it cool, but it will inevitably suck in comparison.

I used to like David Letterman alot more than Leno but nowadays I usually watch The Tonight Show over Letterman. Conan still blows both of them out of the water. I think it's cool for him that he'll get the Tonight Show gig five years from now, but I do tend to believe that the comedy will go more "mainstream." Hopefully I (and the rest of civilization) will still be around to bitch about how un-funny Conan's Tonight Show is these days by then.

Posted - 09/27/2004 : 16:01:19 That's great, Conan on at an earlier time, and probably with a bigger budget. I wonder if I will have television channels on my T.V. by then. I haven't lived anywhere with television channels for over two years now. I just watch movies all the time.

Posted - 09/27/2004 : 15:29:31 I use to love Leno when he was a guest on the old Late Night with Letterman.
And floop is probably right. Moving up an hour will mean less risky comedy, and more guests and fewer comedy bits. That's what happened to Letterman. |
