The Ronnettes, of course.
Followed closely by the Beatles and the Velvet Underground in a tie for second. Then a tie for the bronze for Love and Os Mutantes. The Beach Boys don't place, but they get a smileyface sticker, a lollipop, and a pat on the head for effort. |

You're all forgetting the Stooges and the MC5. Dylan was undoubtedly the most important as he was influential to probably everyone else mentioned, even the Beatles were Dylan disciples. The Velvets were the Pixies of that era and are very important as well, and while the Beatles were great personally I don't see them living up as solo artists to Dylan or even Lou Reed, and definately not to Brian Wilson. Long live the Beach Boys, can't wait till Tuesday for the official release of Smile.

What about Love? Sure, I like the Beatles and Velvet Underground more, but Love were still an awesome band. Forever Changes is always said to be their classic, but their first record had some kickass songs, too, like My Flash On You, which sounds unlike anything in 1966. It's SO punk, and kind of garage rock, too. And then there's A Message to Pretty, which is a nice, tender song. And the cover of Bacharach's My Little Red Book is one of the greatest songs of all-time. Give Love some respect, yah'll.

Oh yeah, how could we forget Hendrix? The Velvet Underground were one of the most original and interseting 60's bands(would Sonic Youth be Sonic Youth without them?) Simon And Garfunkel were quintessencialy 60's, although they're a little lightweight. |

sure, the Beatles are definitely up there. To deny that would be folly.
but Jimi Hendrix is definitely one of the most talented, amazing musicians from that period. The one and only. His sound/style/aesthetic are irreplaceable (you wouldn't know it from the billions of jackasses who have tried to rip him off over the years...)
Jefferson Airplane are and always will be one of my favorite bands from the '60's. Unique sound, blend of female/male vocals (Grace & Marty)...definitive psychedelic guitar style from Jorma Kaukonen. Anyone with me on that? |

The Beatles are obvious, but that's really a compliment(everyone picks 'em.) Zepplin had so many great pieces of music, though(Page is a genius creative writer/arranger). And it has to be said, one-man-band Dylan probably revolutionised popular music more than The Beatles, in a more subtle way. The Doors have some great songs, but they were totally over-rated. The albums don't hold up as well as the singles. |

I like alot of Beatles stuff, but as far as sixties music that I listen to alot they are not the winners. Whenever I find myself nostalgic for the sounds of an era that was never mine, I usually am listening to the Doors, Pink Floyd or Led Zepplin. But, with Pink Floyd it's usually not "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" era material, which would not technically make it sixties.

I would like to add Del Shannon to the list. His real name is Charles Westover though. He isn't on the map like the Beatles or Beach boys, but in terms of innovation, his attempts at experimenting with time signature and chord progressions was considered ground-breaking at the time. |
