I picked up the vinyl the other day and it sounds absolutely incredible--a must-have! By-the-way, SMiLE has been nominated for three grammys, which, although I absolutely could not care less about the Grammys, is great for Brian and hopefully he can win his first one. One thing that's kind of ironic and funny is that Mrs. O'Leary's Cow, a track that, as he himself said (in the ShowTime documentary), had a hand in his not completing SMiLE, has been nominated for best instrumental. So the infamous track that nearly drove Brian insane is up for a grammy!

I appear to be 2 months late to the party, but I've been listening to SMiLE for 2 weeks straight now, and I love it. I can't get enough of it, it's constantly in my head, it's beautiful, mind blowing amazing, perfect, and wonderfull. I don't have enough adjectives for it. This is a masterpiece. Wow... All I can see is "Gee".
NimrodsSon Posted - 10/02/2004 : 14:23:21
I guess it's like comparing apples and oranges. They both are mind blowing, but each in its own unique way.

Shit, I don't know if SMiLE is better than Pet Sounds. But I do have to say this...I think if SMiLE were completed as it is today back in 1967...then yes. Right now I don't know...they're both fucking mind blowing.

And yes, both are better than Sgt. Pepper's.

I guess I just wasn't made for these times.
darkoutsider Posted - 10/02/2004 : 14:04:28
Brian Wilson is genius. It's that simple. If this album came out when it was suppose to, I don't think Sgt. Pepper would've compared. I love Sgt. Pepper but fuck, McCartney and Lennon would be bowing to Brian, not that they didn't already but you get where I'm going with this. Just a great album, great songs, great melodies, great harmonies, great arrangments, just a great album all 'round.

and PixieSteve you're right. I mean they look up to him, he shouldn't be comparing himself to a band that looked up to him. He was their hero, he should take pride in that. The Beatles love me, that's right bitches or something along those lines. Paul McCartney will be the first to tell you The Beach Boys are better.

PixieSteve Posted - 10/02/2004 : 08:25:23
the man needs to stop comparing himself to the beatles.
NimrodsSon Posted - 10/02/2004 : 07:17:47
So what do you all think: is it better than Pet Sounds? I'm going to say yes, but it is quite a different type of album, too. Brian also thinks it is his best work yet; In one recent quote, he said that Sgt. Pepper was better than Pet Sounds (which I don't agree with), but SMiLE is better than Sgt. Pepper.

I think it gives it a special sound. And it's not like fake trumpets or something.

Reply to myself: it's better than the live performance, but just 20% better. The show was so awesome and perfect.

I would agree with that if it is using synths for the sake of using a synth, but using a synth harpsichord and tack piano sound instead of the real thing is not okay with me ever. But still, in the grand scheme of things it's not that big of a deal.

Oh, and Ivan, Jim is right about no new songs being added, but there are a couple of new transitions and a beautiful new intro to I'm in Great Shape.

Jim, I know what you mean about Roll Plymouth Rock; it seems like it's missing something.

The new recordings sound almost *TO A T* to the old recordings...every note, every sound...I couldn't believe my ears when I heard it. I think the best example of how exact they got to the old recordings is "Workshop." Nearly every hammer hit, every saw hack, every piece of wood dropping, every background voice is exactly the same as it was 37 years ago...amazing. No songs were added...but vocals were added to previously instrumental tracks, along with new vocals to other tracks (Rock Plymouth Roll, etc...). It's pretty much the same feel...better sounding. I still kinda miss the "atmosphere" of the old recordings though. "Do You Like Worms?" aka "Rock Plymouth Roll" sounded a lot more haunting than it does now...certain stuff like that. It's a must buy for anyone.

Another thing I like about it is the ability to call it Brian Wilson's "SMiLE," not The Beach Boys' "SMiLE." When people think The Beach Boys, they think surfing, cars, and girls. It underminds the art and beauty behind the music...that's why I call it "Pet Sounds" by Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys.

I guess I just wasn't made for these times.

I don't have it yet - so: has anyone compared the new recordings (they're all new, right?) with recordings from the original smile sessions? Has anything been added (except a final track order..)? Is it just better sounding? The same feel?

which songs? Surf Safari? Surfin U.S.A?
Have you heard Pet Sounds?

The man was so young when he made this. I cant think of too many others who have made such and album. from the 60's, without todays technology or super huge mixing desks. My friends are hit and miss with the Beach boys, but just like they are with Frank Black. I got into the Beach Boys then realised the man behind the machine was indeed Brian Wilson. I.M.O a f***kin genius.
each to their own i guess.

come to think of it, the impossilbe hight notes were never sung 100% by Brian in the past too

I think his voice sounds great on this record
I don't particularry hear the fakeness of the harpsichord and piano
but I think it's very very lazy of them to use synths.
On the road ok, but in a studio?

Since I don't hear it, I do actually but I'm not soar about it, I'm not gonna let this
'mistake' ruin my perfect SMiLE

I'm very pleased with this one. Gonna have to listen to it again. And again. Let it really sink in.
NimrodsSon Posted - 09/28/2004 : 19:17:58
It's still shaky, but much better than his other most recent efforts. Of course, his voice is the only thing that even almost deteriorates the new recordings (besides the fake harpsichord and tack piano), but it's not too bad. In fact, it's very good at times and at times quite reminiscent of his 60's voice (especially on Wonderful and Windchimes). Actually, I can't think of any sub-par performances; it's just that his voice isn't quite as enjoyable as it once was, but he sings on tune throughout the album and hit's a few fairly high notes here and there (someone else handles the impossibly high notes on "Surf's Up" for him).

How's Brian's voice held up? It was kind of shaky last time I heard.

It's definitely a notch above the bootlegs.

I haven't heard it live, though...

I won't try to describe or review it because no words can possibly express how spiritual and beautiful this album is! Thank you, Brian!

I'm sitting here listening to SMiLE, and if I were capable of easily crying, I would be. This is up there as the most beautiful music I've ever heard. I'd cry for Brian Wilson, who after more than 37 years, has put his demons aside and sings with all his heart, to prove to the world how beautiful life, love, and imagination can be. His voice is simply beautiful; I never thought I'd appreciate this more than the bootlegs I've collected over the years, but he disproved all the doubters.

Thank you, Brian.

Thank you SO much for that link to the VH1 site version

Anyone else see this live? Really weird hearing how the recorded version has production touches that make it sound like a 60's recording. I get all jumpy just talking about this stuff. Amazing. Just... wow.
