iv been a woody fan since my early teens, and iv seen nearly everything hes released.
for all you out there who might be put off by his -ahem- questionable lifestyle, just try and forget about it and sit down and watch annie hall with a big bag of weed.

I like Husband and Wives, Manhattan Murber Mystery and all of his films of the 70s......nothing beats Sleeper.
However, unlike some people, I really dont give a shit about the Soon-Yin thing.....I am still a big Woody Allen fan. |

I just saw Deconstructing Harry last night, and it was pretty great. I really liked the jump cuts and the meeting of Harry with his characters.

Btw, I tend to think WA is as much overrated in Europe as he's underrated in the US.
I was basing the "dirty" comment on the fact that he fucked a girl who was essentially his step-daughter. Cause that is gross to me, and makes him (in my eyes) a dirty old man. But anyway...
I saw Manhattan over the weekend and liked it. I also recently saw Annie Hall again and I think it's lovely. Some of his writing is just SO funny and great. I love when Alfie describes sex as "the most fun I've ever had without laughing".
Oh, also, YES, the kid in Radio Days is Seth Green. I love that movie! I have to buy that someday.

Yeah, his stuff is classic. They paint a beautiful portrait of Manhattan. His writing is great, casting superb. I wish more American filmmakers followed his lead- the love of the understated. Manhattan's one of my favorites. |

Love and Death is one of my favorites. A good mix of comedy and the Big Questions. Sweet and Lowdown is very entertaining and bittersweet. Great guitar playin', too.
I don't feel he's usually bitter, just disappointed by life and/or people. Sometimes that gives his movies some bite, sometimes it overwhelms the entertainment. Depends on the film. Definitely a dirty old man, though.

Those are two of his films that I haven't seen. And I've seen probably 90% of his films. I've heard great things about both. Isn't Seth Green the little boy in Radio Days?
A former roommate of mine was obsessed with Woody Allen. The only films he would ever rent were Woody Allen, unless his girlfriend was around because she couldn't get into most of them. So I've seen almost everything of his over the course of the last couple years.
It would be hard to pick a favorite, but Sleeper, Manhattan, Play It Again Sam, Mighty Aphrodite, Purple Rose of Cairo, Sweet and Lowdown, Bullets Over Broadway, Deconstructing Harry, Celebrity... those are some favorites.

Some artists are good because they choose good influences : Bergman, Flaubert, Cézanne and Charlie Parker. Of course, it requires talent to mix all these influences and come up with something original. Talent, not genius. His movies are always pretty good, never astonishing. But there is a certain regularity over all those years, although some movies are crappy.
Oh, and I saw Hollywood ending in Paris. Everyone applauded at the end.

I thought that he insulted his French audience in Hollywood Ending.
I saw Hannah And Her Sisters, Husbands And Wifes and Crimes And Misdemeanours during the past two weeks. The last two were excellent viewing.
I loved Annie Hall when I watched it years ago.
I think it is easy to dislike Allen if those neurotic type characters he portrays get on your nerves easily.

I used to LOVE Woody Allen. I used to go see his movies on opening night and now the last one I even saw in a theater was SWEET & LOWDOWN. I just LIKE him now. One thing I enjoy about his movies is how they pack so much into a short amount of time. Most of his movies barely go past 95 minutes.
I actually liked ANYTHING ELSE, but I can't remember much about HOLLYWOOD ENDING.
Favorite Woody movie: maybe DECONSTRUCTING HARRY, because it's so completely dark, but also really funny. STARDUST MEMORIES, RADIO DAYS, and BULLETS OVER BROADWAY are also contenders.
Least favorite: Probably EVERYONE SAYS I LOVE YOU. Maybe the anticipation created by Roger Ebert calling it WA's best movie set me up to expect too much.
Most overrated (in my opinion, of course): CRIMES & MISDEMEANORS.
Ones that everyone puts down, but that I enjoy anyway: SHADOWS & FOG, CELEBRITY.

I dislike most of his movies, but when there's one I like, I really like it. His last couple haven't been so hot, though. Anything Else? Blah, I hate Jason Biggs. Hollywood Ending? One joke picture that took too long getting to it and then didn't seize on all its possibilites

I enjoy some of his stuff and I'm going to guess that Frank likes him. I wonder why people always wonder/care what frank thinks/likes.
