Check out these alterations to these original SW trilogy-some of them are interesting, but I mean sticking Hayden Christensen in there is a bit much....on the subject of movies, I've recently seen Hellboy(okay-really liked some of it and was looking forward to seeing it, have to admit it's a bit messy ) Super Size Me(very good), also watched a few older movies in the last while(Amelie-terrific, the original Day Of The Jackyl, The Ipcress File, Brief Encounter-all great, plus the Sean Penn-directed The Pledge-good, very well made, the story got a little convoluted, though. Wanna see Open Water, mebbe this weekend.

another fav moment: Roy has just taken two whacks to the head from Deckard's metal pipe. He grabs the pipe and yells to Deckard, "Thats the SPIRIT!!!"
and "I can see you!!" [wolf howl] Hell yeah.

"Tyrell told me she was a special model; no termination date. I don't know how long we have together, but then again who does?"
"..attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion...all of those...moments will be lost...like tears...in...rain."
Fucking beautiful movie. Gonna go get a copy of the director's cut now so I can be a full-on BR geek.

yeah i think so, been a while since i read them, but the only real differences are... (thinks about it as this normally confuses him)... ok the book goes to saturn, the film goes to jupiter... clarke then uses jupiter in the other books of the series, mainly (i believe) because of europa and the theory that jupiter's core may be an enourmous pure diamond... but yeah i think he also followed on from the film as more people were familiar with it and didn't want to confuse matters. there's no other major differences iirc. apparently it was a good job kubrick used jupiter as the image they were going to produce has since been found to be inacurate and it would have looked a bit naff now.

Blowup Whos' Afraid of Virginia Woolf? 2001 Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Leaving Las Vegas. Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. Slacker The Big Lebowski. Lost in Translation Igby Goes Down.
Ok, I'm an idiot. Thank you for asking for a partial list of my favorite movies.

Pretty good list here, KSR. If you like these then you'll surely like my suggested additions:
May Ghost World Roadside Prophets Down By Law (in fact, any Jarmusch film would probably suit you) Way of the Gun Storytelling (or Welcome to the Dollhouse or even Happiness)

Posted - 09/27/2004 : 09:22:48 It's not because it's slow. I watched Barry Lyndon for the third time yesterday and never felt tired. And I saw Jackie Brown 3 times at the cinema (my fave Tarantino movie, hands down). I also love Brazil which you could call slow-paced and intellectual, and I totally love 2001. I just didn't get Blade Runner for some reason. Maybe I should give it yet another chance but I don't feel like spending another 2 hours watching it. I'll just accept the fact that I'm an idiot and watch Dude Where's My Car instead.

Posted - 09/27/2004 : 09:02:05 Man, I love Blade Runner. It's one of my favorite movies. I can see falling asleep during it if you're very tired though. I fell asleep during Jackie Brown (actually every person I know fell asleep during Jackie Brown the first time they saw it), but when I finally saw it all I liked it. Well . . . I remember thinking it was ok at least. I need to watch it again before further comment. Anyway, Blade Runner is amazing.

Posted - 09/27/2004 : 08:51:41 Am I the only one who thinks Blade Runner is boring? I usually have pretty common tastes in movies, and everyone keeps raving about how BR is the best sci-fi movie ever and all, so I thought I would really enjoy it. I went to see it at the cinema a few years ago and fell asleep after 15 minutes. It was very late actually, I think the movie started at midnight. And then last year I downloaded it and tried to give it another chance, and guess what... fell asleep again. This time though I managed to wake up quickly and watched the whole movie, but I don't understand what's so great about it.

What a great film! It really was beautifully restored and looks and sounds better than I have EVER seen it. I could really do a marathon of them right now, and I may yet do just that today...

Its full of stars.
and boring?!?! well i admit 2001, the novel, doesn't end as well as the film, as the loose ends are tied up and you actually learn what bowman has become and what he can do, but it's a nice compliment to the film imo, adds to the story. 2010 the book is a whole, whole, whole lot better than it's film version.

Posted - 09/26/2004 : 08:25:23 2001 is a tricky one, and my favourite film of all time to boot... it's possible that the film can be understood/interpretted differently to how the actual space odyssey books go. if you read the books, all 4 of them, then it's pretty obvious what the whole thing is about, as clarke loves to explain everything he can... i don't know, i don't think it's too hard to interpret, you don't have to look too deep into. it's hard having read the books too, as they all kind of merge into 1 and you end up with clarke's story rather than the collaborative effort that was the film...

Posted - 09/26/2004 : 08:14:11 it's interesting that you assume that i cannot possibly understand everything in 2001.
how do you know how many times i've seen it?
how can you guess at my ability to unravel kubrick's symbolism?
the fact is, 2001 is not as complex as it seems. once you figure out kubrick's visual language, it becomes much easier. |

Too bad nobody would actually KNOW it was a Blade Runner reference unless you told them.
Or maybe they would. I've never actually seen Blade Runner. It isn't like the screenwriters made up that line, though.
As for the original subject of the thread, I have no intention of getting the Star Wars DVDs, but yeah, I think the alterations were a pretty dumb idea.

well it's ambiguous to you because you haven't figured it out.
but if you were dumb enough, every movie would be ambiguous.
it's ambiguous because there are multiple multiple interpretations of it.
you may have yours, but other people have differing interpretations as well. i have my interpretation of the ending.. but i'm open-minded enough to understand that that's my interpretation. and that other interpretations are just as valid, since that's the nature of the work. it's not straightforward.
i'm glad you've figured it out for yourself though.
