I noticed that the new Morrisey and Jonathan Richman are in cardboard cd packages that are about an inch longer on either side....there is no case and it looks like a smaller version of Vinyl records.....this kinda sucks for shelfing cds.....anyone else notice this?

yeah, i'm not a fan of the larger style cardbaord cd packages - it's just asking me to scratch my cd's.
love digipaks, but jewel cases much better than these newish ones - rubbish i say!.

EXACTLY.....the scratching!

I do like the larger packaging for the Morrissey and Richman cds, but yes, the Richman one is getting scratched up real quick. And I'm worried the corners will bend. They'd better fucking not. Dammit.

hmm... haven't seen it... been trying to stay away from record stores until I get a job. I would say it would be cool as a collector's album, but just for the Pixies though. I wouldn't want premium packaging outside the typical standard size cardboard or jewel box case, due to the pain factor. You know what would be cool a regular sized cardboard cd case that pops up like one of those pop up books when you open the inside-- it could be the band or the band logo or even some random crazy artwork.

I used to work in packaging it it's probably a tactic to increase sales-- sometimes cool packaging works and sometimes it doesn't. If I was a record company, I would have to make sure that there would be more people that would purchase the cd in that shape vs. the sales that would be lost because it is annoying. I am guessing based on the poll here that those big cases don't increase sales.

My guess is that these packages increase distribution costs as well as increase your variable packaging costs so it makes it a risky proposition.

The one looks like a library book with a the jacket and library card on the first page? Don't run your finger over that one too! It also feels awfull.

The sound of that album, HTTT, isn't like normal albums either. Cool? Yes. Annoying? Fuck yes.

Tanya Donelly's Whiskey Tango Ghosts cardboard packaging is really good. The booklet is made of good looking wrinkly paper. Just don't run your fingers over it as it feels very strange.

I just thought it was Ramona responding at first and not Apl. Went throught the thread too fast.

'S ok! Only meant lightly and with a friendly winky. I was just befuddled at how often I get mistaken for ramona. I guess I shouldn't mind -not at all a bad person to be mistaken for.

And fbf, I think I have a Nick Cave cd cardboard sleeve that's vastly outsized like you mention. It sticks out like a sore tumb.

The cardboard sleeves get dirty and damaged far easier, they need plastic sleeves like tha albums used to have.

I agree with Apl they're better looking for sure.

I know.....but I'm saying these newer buggers are actually an inch longer on each side.....
apl4eris Posted - 09/15/2004 : 11:31:08
I may be confused. I have a bunch of cds with carboard sleeves or packages, some similar to vinyl packaging, some wider than average, some not. Is this something completly new?

I actually prefer them, because they feel more personal, not to mention they usually have unique designs and artwork. They stick out a bit, but then again my life is way less symmetrically pleasing than it used to be!
