Okay, I'm not, but I'm just sharing something exciting. I engineered an album by a band called Spooncat! from South Dakota. They're very, very good. Anywho, they decided to put a rough mix of one of the songs on their dmusic.com page. It's climbing their charts rather quickly, much to our surprise. As the engineer, I'm rather proud and would like to help them out. I know the folks here are rather open to good music (otherwise this forum wouldn't be here) so I thought I'd send the link your way. It's free. The page is http://spooncat.dmusic.com. The song is called Watching You Swim In The Dark. Check it out, if you'd like. I know the band would appreciate it. And check out the web site, too. It's great for unsigned bands. It's kind of like a new mp3.com. Enjoy!

Dietr

Just don't do it in the sea. That's when sharks feed.

I'd agree that it's terribly romantic. Unless, in the context of the song, somebody is stalking you.

Like Roman Polanski. My idol - his current girl is the beautiful Emmanuelle Seigner.

Monsieur:

Thanks and thanks for remembering my 16+-year union. Another issue is that, historically, the actress should be terribly young (and naive). An ingenue, as the French say. So you need someone barely legal. Jailbait, as the Americans say.

Yeah, the title just grabs me, swimming being my favorite thing after reading Monsieur's posts. I think you *should* become a director.

Would you star in my film?

(OK, I remember you're married so I officially declare it was a joke!)

I rather like the drums. They synth beat was actually used as a click track during recording, but we all seemed to like it quite a bit. But hey, to each his own. I'm glad you dig the rest of the song. The live drums have an earthy feel to them that I like. As the "engineer" I also enjoyed recording the drums for this one. They wanted all these extra classical percussion instruments (massive bass drums, etc.) played along with the regular kit. I think I had fourteen or fifteen mics around the drummer for this one. I don't know how that is in comparison to the real world, but we had fun doing it.

I thoroughly enjoyed everything about the song except the DRUMS, which are absolutely terrible beyond words (not terrible, as in played badly, but rather, completely inappropriate for that song) and nearly ruin everything else that is good in the song

¡Viva los Católicos!

Yeah I was kind of kidding really. It's just the stalker theme that they share I assume.

Could be. I wouldn't know. I just recorded them. I'll see them play tomorrow. Maybe I'll ask if I remember. Every Breath is a bit more pop sounding. A lot of Spooncat!'s stuff has a pop feel to it (as in catchy) but this song is downright creepy. And they don't have Sting singing for them.
Homers_pet_monkey Posted - 09/10/2004 : 11:16:13
Yeah it is a very good title.

So prozacrat, is it a modern take on Every Breath You Take?

I'm with ramona on this one, I can't hear the music (I post from the office) but the title is great. If I were a French art film director, I would probably make films like that (and I would fuck the actress before she becomes a star).

I'm not sure they actually sing that line in the song, or if it's just the title. I've never really been one to listen to words. I like the melodies tney make. But the lyrics I have picked up, and from what the band has told me, it's a song about a stalker. It's creepy, so it reminds me of my band.
ramona Posted - 09/09/2004 : 14:17:51
I haven't listened yet but I love the phrase "I'm watching you swim in the dark" - it is so beautiful!

I think they just did. Thanks. Yeah, I use the term "engineer" loosely. But that's what my technical title is where I work, so I guess I just go by it. I'm just having fun.
Cult_Of_Frank Posted - 09/09/2004 : 12:26:08
Pretty decent song, actually. Plus, any band that does the Abbey Road medley live is in my good books. There are moments of the song I really dig and others that I don't so much, but overall makes me want to hear more from them.

I'm not a sound "engineer" (I don't like using that term unless the individual is in fact an actual engineer, complete with the oath, etc) but the recording sound, mixing, and quality is all well done and probably a large part of the song's success. I'd be comfortable having you record some of our stuff, put it that way.

Anyway, I'm gonna' listen to s'more from these guys, thanks for the head's up and may you hit number one...

And Watching You Swim In The Dark is now number three!! I'm very excited. Homer's, I don't know why it's not working for you. May have to try a couple of different things. Tricksy internetses.
prozacrat Posted - 09/09/2004 : 11:14:56
OH!! They put another song on there. I did engineer the song Before. Actually, I engineered it twice. We did it once last January, but they wanted more out of the song and I happened to get some new microphones in. So now it sounds even better. Check that one out, too!

Hey Dietr, I enjoyed that quite a bit! Great feel and unique treatment and a nice Beatles strings part towards the end, IMHO. I listened to the song streaming in iTunes, and srangely, the next song that played was a perfect match - Legendary Pink Dots, "Our Lady in Cervetori". Think I'll go listen to the other songs...did you engineer the other tracks on that site as well?

Technically, I did some engineering for the song Magic, but the rest of the stuff on there is prior to my engineering days. There will be more. I'm sure they'll tease people with other parts of the album. Thanks for checking it out!
Homers_pet_monkey Posted - 09/09/2004 : 11:11:34
Dammit, I can't get it to play!
