Kathleen, now go to the shop and get the orange album. steal it, if you don't have the money right now. it's worth the risk. listen to los angeles, ten percenter, two spaces, tossed, don't ya rile 'em,...just listen to the whole album ten times in a row. after that you'll be convinced that this is frank's masterpiece...then listen to TOTY again. especially to two reelers. than again you'll say, hold on, TOTY is a few millimeters ahead of the orange/yellow album. and there you'll have a struggle that'll never end !

I dunno... I really like the orange/yellow album alot. It's amazing. I think it is great but for some reason it always reminds me of the Pixies breaking up... TOTY doesn't have that emotional baggage associated with it. But thanks for the advise two reelers! |

good to be remembered of that...that's one of the best tunes frank has ever written, i think. and it is hidden on this not so well known CD..
heck, the whole Cult of ray record is a bit underrated. the marsist and the title song are ingenious, and all the little short punky songs are very strong, too. and i like the attitude of the whole album - "i want to be alone, i want to be inside my headphones, ..into a state of my own" the two instrumentals are very nice, too. they show how fine lyle workman fitted. and the whole sound of the album, so clear and fresh.
COR is not his best, but it also not the to-be-forgotten album, as many say.

Posted - 09/12/2004 : 02:05:44 I was a teenager (14) when I heard TOTY - they were playing Headache all the time on the radio and I liked the song very much. After listening for the first time, it was like when you're hungry and then you have this very tasty meal so you eat too much and then you ruin your stomach.
Then I started repeating always the same songs: Thalassocracy, Headache, Speedy Marie, Pie in the sky - before listening the others. Intellectually, I have never been less underestimated than by this music. It was so intelligent, so surprising, so beautiful. When I remember my teenage years I remember TOTY.

Posted - 09/08/2004 : 20:52:45 DITS is on it's own plain. just put on headphones and crank it up real loud and listen to "the swimmer". then remember that this stuff was recorded live. gorgeous.
SMYT was instantly awesome for me and then kept getting better and better. it took me a while to get into COR, but when i finally came around it became one of my favorites. same with Oddballs.

Posted - 09/08/2004 : 13:32:17 SMYT very hard to get into!? yeah right!
i myself find cult of ray, catholic's s/t and pistolero the worst. i don't dislike them... but you know, as a fan i have to admit these aren't why i like frank black (and his merry catholics). DITS and beyond is great though. |

Cult of Ray may be hard to find, and I also list it up there with SMYT as "very hard to get into". Pistolero and Dog in The Sand are the best catholic cd's in my opinion. Pistolero is more Pixies rocking and DITS is the best of the pedal steel guitar era.

That´s funny because I´ve got the original cassete too that a friend recorded to me for a long time ago, I feel old when I remember it! I don´t listen to it anymore because I got the CD, but is really a great album!

Posted - 09/08/2004 : 04:49:05 i first listened to TOTY then show me your tears, then frank black s/t, and then i got the rest at the same time and listened to them two or three times chronologically.
i'd say doing it in in order is the best idea though.
TOTY is one of my favourites. completely different to newer stuff though. the first self titled album is the most similar, btw.
i've noticed i have a new favourite frank black song every week, from all albums. |

Posted - 09/07/2004 : 21:04:22 TOTY and SMYT are two completely different places; two completely different styles. I would say, if you want the whole Frank Black Experience (that should be the new name of his band) then just go chronologically. In that case you should backtrack a bit, pick up the FB debut (the controversial yellow/orange album) and then go on to the Cult of Ray, and so on and so forth.
P.S. Although I love TOTY, I still am a teeny bit more partial to the debut album. It has a cohesive, fluid feeling throughout the whole album that TOTY lacks.

Posted - 09/07/2004 : 21:00:15 well, if you like americana, go with catholics. if you want something more along the lines of TOTY, go with the first FB release, also known as "orange", "yellow", "s/t", and "awesome".

TOTY is a instant favorite... FB really took it to some other stratopheric level on that one! I am blown away. Now I see why some many people are begging to get the Catholics touring again
So is SMYT the next best place to listen. Is TOTY Franks masterpiece? Wow...that was the best new music I have listened to in ages! (New Pixies excluded). |
