So I just picked up a copy of the so-called 'fifth' VU album, Squeeze. In actuallity, its a Doug Yule solo record released after Lou left the band, though I believe Moe and Sterling did play on a couple of tracks. The way I heard it, the band's shiester(sp?) manager, Sesnick, insisted on putting the record out under the velvets name to squeeze a few more dollars out of the dying group, hence the album title.
The record's actually not bad. Its your average early seventies pop record, with a heavy Beatles influence. I know the LP gets a lot of hate from the fans, but i think its unjustified, being a victim of the circumstances of the recording and its erronious lable. I personially like Yule and feel a bit sorry for him. though he played on more recordings then John Cale, he was never able to get out of his shadow. He wasn't even invited along for the reunion tour. Poor fellah.
Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone else had heard this and had an opinion on it. Its truly not on par with the rest of the Velvets stuff, but its definitely not unlistenable trash. Thoughts?

If you don't judge it as a Velvet Underground record, it's actually more than a bit charming, as I'm told Doug Yule is.
It's a total Boston rock thing – as opposed to a NYC rock thing – similar to Wllie "Boom Boom" Alexander (who also was briefly drafted to play with the final Reed-less incarnation of the VU.
I have some rather boomy audience recordings of the final VU tour where they played "Dopey Joe" and others from this LP alongside their more well-known stuff. Sterl and Moe are present and accounted for.
They're certainly only for completists, but if you'd like me to burn you a copy, let me know and we can trade CD-Rs.
