hello there

I know pixies and Sonic youth are like rival bands so SY are bound to be quite unpopular in this forum - but i was wondering what SY songs pixies fans like. whats your favourite? mines Mote or Dirty boots

Sonic Youth is one of my top 5 bands. As far as favorite song goes, I really can't say...it's really hard to choose one, two, or three favorite songs when there are so many. Teenage Riot was my favorite for a while.

I guess I just wasn't made for these times.

I think that SY'S "commercial albums" are the best, from Day Dream Nation to Washing Machine is my favourite , although Sister is a really fantastic album as well. And i suppose DDN isn't that commercial but it could be considered a breakthrough album.

I know what you mean, like radiohead and creep poor bastards, and sure arena gigs and bigger gigs but some bands go under if they don't get that big, it is a job as well after all, I'd rather go to see bands at bigger venues with more twats than not see any of the bands at all.

I apologise for my rant, no sleep and a shit pile of stress make tre a grumpy bunny

It's kind of a double-edged sword, I guess. It's good when more people get into music that you like, but that also means more crowded concerts and a greater chance of annoying people entering the fan community. There's a certain satisfaction in liking something semi-obscure, but it can also lead one to wonder WHY it's so obscure.

I think there are some bands that are recognized by the general public for songs that are worse than the majority of their output. It's good that they like the band, certainly, but I can see being annoyed if all someone knows is the one big hit song.

actually while I think about it, a short rant if you will, it bugs me when people (yes even the bands sometimes) disown stuff for being too commercial, or too popularist in the case of the fans they only usually freak because it means more people than normal will tune into the band, the hardcore groupies probably do like the newer commercial popularist stuff as much as people tuning in at a later date but are all upset that they won't be part of an elite small group of fans so proud to talk about their unknown uber cool slightly underground bands, fucking muso snobs. Starting their little new fan old fan shit (look at the case of the manic street preachers, that got real ugly real ugly) Piss me off. I for one am glad if people stop listening to shite and start getting into good because I'm sick of having to train these people into understanding the difference. I'm also glad that when I meet new people I don't have to pull that face, you know the one that goes 'you listen to WHAT!!!'

Except in the case of the manics mind, absolute SHITE.

Rival Bands? I bet Frank would get Thurston Greco-Roman style but Thurston could run Frank around the ring and tire him.

A great Canadian band called themselves Eric's trip!
They are very funny in The Year Punk Broke. I think that is where Kurt Cobain unleashed a fire extinguisher on Black Francis while Black was on stage. Kurt ran for the hills!

Schizophrenia, Tom Violence, Eric's Trip, Bull In the Heather and Skip Tracer are some of their greatest songs to me

was gonna mention them but didnt wanna upset anyone on the board. i'm sure 91 was when Kurt blasted Frank with a fire extinguisher during one of his solo sets....no shots of any of it.

do you know if it was an SY tour with their fave bands or just european festivals they all just happened to be at. all those ameican bands showin us euros how to do it. ah the good old days!

I hope this is remedied if and when "the year punk broke" is released on DVD at some point. That is, if the guy even shot any BF footage at all...

Kim Deal seems to get along with Sonic Youth. I think it's mainly Charles who dislikes them. It could have something to do with Sonic Youth refusing to show the Monkey Gone to Heaven video due to Joey's thumbs up, long ago when they hosted 120 Minutes. I doubt that's all of it. Charles has said that he holds a place in his heart for every Beatles song, and on the opposite side of that, he has no place in his heart for any Sonic Youth song. At least I remember reading that somewhere. I'm no reliable source.

btw..kim gordon helped produced the breeders "cannonball" video so as far as a rivalry i dunno what that's about.

the dijits (punk/rock/rockabilly/etc) did have some nasty stuff and weirdness to say about the pixies after they got dumped on some slot they were supposed to have on a pixies show in the early 90s..dont remember who replaced them on the bill but it was supposedly kinda last minute

thurston's love for avant garde noise is a love/hate relationship for some of sy's fans...i cant take it personally. check out moore's 'three incredible ideas' for the more pallatable side and "lost to the city" for the less pallatable side. as fucked as it is he probally wasnt being a dick when he was doing the noise shit, its just orchestrated madness from a dude who loves some feedback.
VoVat Posted - 09/08/2004 : 17:40:09
It's that whole East Side-West Side rivalry. Only in this case, "East Side" means "actual melodies."

I saw them in Chicago a little over a month ago. They were incredible, though I had just heard Sonic Nurse the day before the show and listened to it multiple times just to try to get to know it before I saw them, and that's mostly what they played. I just wish I'd had more time to absorb it before hand. But yeah, even though I don't listen to them all that much, their live show is awesome. For me, it's the type of music that really benefits from watching the band perform it, just like jazz or classical. Sure, you could say all music benefits from watching the band play live, but I'm speaking strictly about stuff I don't listen to at home or in the car, but enjoy seeing live.
We missed the first opening band, Hair Police, but the second opening band, Wolf Eyes, were fucking awful. It was just pounding noise with lots of screaming. There wasn't anything to it but that. And the sound was so bad, too. It made the Thinking Fellers Union Local #282 look like The Cars.

"rival bands?" Never heard anyone call the Pixies and SY that...

I have many favorite Sonic Youth songs...so I'll just go w/ fave albums: EVOL, Dirty, Bad Moon Rising, Sonic Nurse, Goo, Kill Yr Idols EP

I also saw them at Brixton last Thursday and thought that they spend about 1/3 of the time pissing about, but at the end of the day what do you want. Sonic Youth are bound to fuck about and have extended feedback/distortion sessions, you have to expect it.

That said they are a great band although i agree that they can be hit or miss.

Goo is probably my favourite album but they've done lots of really great stuff.
GypsyDeath Posted - 09/07/2004 : 07:37:59
I couldnt choose a song, but some of my fav albums are day dream nation, goo, murray street, dirty...actually, I dont have a favourite album either.

I saw them at ATP, and they were fucking amazing. I was inches away from Kim Gordon. *sigh*

My faves are anything off Daydream Nation and Goo... songs off the top of my head... ummmm....it's one of their cheezier songs but Cool Thang is comming to mind. Mildred Pierce is also a classic and so is the movie it's about :)

Ha! That's it! I've gotta open my mind, maaan. They did put on a good show, though, I must admit. I'm not Sonic Youth's biggest fan. I like Daydream Nation and Murray Street, but, they are quite repetitive.

The support bands were fucking awful. I don't know if they were the same as you mentioned Nimrod's, but the first oriental duo gave me a headache, and the second band I was sure had left some amp on with a jack not plugged in somewhere. It was just, you know, that hum you get of electrical equipment, for a ridiculous amount of minutes. I think people started to throw things at them.
offerw Posted - 09/06/2004 : 13:00:57
Sonic Youth pretty much blew me away when I heard them the first time. I got EVOL, Sister and Daydream Nation all at once and listened to those three records only for a few months. Daydream is still my favorite. Dirty later on was also good but I think the band disowned it for being too commercial? I agree that Mote and Diamond Sea are damn good songs too.

I cannot listen to their latest albums that much though. Everything post Dirty sounds the same to me.

I bought their video compilation over the weekend. All their videos from Goo onwards. The best moment is Kim Deal in Little Trouble Girl. She looks very, very lovely.

Also, their opening bands--Magik Markers and that other bands that does the shit with the microphones--fucking terrible! To have to sit through that for an hour and a half really makes you want to kill yourself. I suppose the microphone band could be interesting for a little while, but Magik Markers is absolutely the worst band I've ever heard in my life.
