So i am back from my summer vacations in the olympic Athens and i log in to the forum after a month or so and i immediately use the active topics button and i realize that there are hundreds of new topics. What did i miss? I'm too lazy to read all of them so please update me on the more important things that i did loose during my absense, like the swimmer's 300th reincarnation or that controversial thread that made you hate each other during the summer.

Thanks.

I won that game of chess. We played about 20 moves and he quit. He was going to lose anyway. Word up.

Sounds like a great idea. I love vegetables, talk of vegetables, and vegetable gardening. Okra is one of the best, and such a lovely shape.

If Frank's anywhere near as excited about okra as he is popcorn, we'll be in for a treat!

munchien, I can't remember if you missed the chess showdown between the esteemed Monsieur LBF and Monsieur Monsieur, but on a related note, there is a Chess world championship that is going to be held in a very small town in Kansas in a short while, called "Clash of the Titans". It's between 7-time World Chess Champion Anatoly Karpov and 4-time Women’s World Champion Susan Polgar".

I've heard they're going to have it streaming live on the internet. I'll probably be watching.

For the record, my post was a joke, not a political statement.

God bless the Greeks and their accomplishment of hosting an Olympic Games! History marches onward...

You get some okra in a nice stew with tomatoes and potatoes and it's good stuff. Haven't had that in some time... I'll probably visit family while I'm there, but otherwise I'm going to look for a fun non-office type job just to meet people, learn the language better, and get away from myself.

Floop, I'd love to see that tux!

Mun Chien, I was in Athens in... 2001, wow, that was a long time ago all of a sudden. The metro was in place in certain remote areas, but I had to take a bus from the airport 40 mins to get to a station and then it took me right to Omonia. Found a nice hostel there, surprisingly, as well as an internet cafe where I met the owner and chatted and he basically refused my money when I went to pay him for the end of the week. And pastichio for like $2CDN. Good times! But overall it was a nightmare. I love driving, but I was never more happy to give up the wheel. Came in from Tripolis and drove to the new airport (made all the worse by the construction and so on) and was physically exhausted by the time we got there. And then we had to drive back to Tripolis that same night. That was rough.

Anyway, I'm hoping to meet up with a bunch of 'ya as I'm going to travel Europe for awhile before going down to Greece to work. I have to figure out how long I'm allowed in the country, 'cause I know friends have gone for longer than 3 months but I don't know how, and don't really want to end up in the army, though if it's only a 6 mo stint, could be worth it to have the citizenship. Thinking of working my way down from London (maybe see a little UK this time, we'll see)...

But that's all off topic.

as far as the "american press being ironic about security" and coupled with the fact that Atlanta had a bomb explosion, no one hates the United States like certain groups of people do,; but on the other hand, Greece, the home of the Olympics and the roots of Western Modernism, I think the whole world thought that Greece was sacred and therefore are far less likely to plot an attack. I am sure there were attacks against the Olpympis this year, and I am even more sure that they were to target American atheletes and people, but who needs to do that in Greece, a sacred place of the world, when anti-Amereicans can attack US anywhere they want to, even in our own country. So I think your above post, Mun Chein, is far mroe Ironic than the AMerican Press' coverage of the security issues concerning the Olpmics.

And for the record, I read, write, translate and speak Ancient Greece and Latin, ammong approaching 25 other languages and forms of communication * (sign, brail etc.)

So, no offense, I just felt like responding to that issue.

Good to see you are back man, have you seen Floop's signature? He's mad because I have a better beard, I can out-shoot him in Golf by 18 strokes minimum, and I am a better cook. I just want to help him, he needs it. =)

so, lastly, Yellow or Orange?

fear sells but who's buying? i am not paying any attention to the terrorism addiction that's all over. fear won't stop me from visiting spain and england the next few months since statistically it's more probable that i get killed a car accident or die by a heart attack more than being envolved in a terrorist attack. people believe only what they want to believe, that's it.

PS: Dean i don't know when you last visited Athens but it really rocks now, with the new metro, tram, streets and everything. pretty much a new city. maybe we will even have the chance to meet if i happen to be there.

VoVat. Very clever!

Dean, really, a good part of a year in Greece? I would get so fat on my aunt's cooking. Okra gets such a bad name in the States, maybe Canada, too?

Heh, I was more objecting to the term nice than boy. :)

Don't worry, though, us Greek boys get the equivalent about our Greek girl counterparts even on the other side of the world. It only exasperates matters that I've been single for a little while and am going to be in Greece for the better part of next year.

Fear sells. Fear and sex and all those primal emotions. We've just gotta' quit buying it.

And yeah, my friends would ask me about getting things ready and the Greeks being unprepared, etc, and I'd just smile at them and tell them that they would delay to the last possible instant and then do whatever it took to get it done. Even I was starting to worry at the end it wouldn't happen, but sure enough... it was done and spectacular. I'm looking forward to a better Athens when I go there next spring.

ok,let me tell you a thing. i didn't mean to be offensive but american press was pretty ironic about our capacity to organize good and safe games. i will remind you that the same united states miserably failed to do so in atlanta back in '96 were they had a bomb explosion and if i remember right there was at least one dead. and i clearly remember many forum members making fun of the works in progress relying on many false information published by (mainly) american and british media. wanna now how it ended? american athletes arrived (in crete) were they were put in a mini fortress away from any possible danger while the rest of the world was having fun at athens. not only that. they accused the antidoping control doctors of being a terrorist group and had them arrested, when those poor guys tried to practice a fully legitimate surprise control. they managed to postpone the tests for 2 days which are more than sufficient to clear the blood from illegal substances. what a coincidence. so sick and tired of the american terror hysteria which was completely unfounded and caused serious economic damage to the games and sick of hearing that a small country can't organize an event of such a proportion i said damn americans and their ignorance of facts.

Well, he was called a damn American, so I can understand him wanting to retaliate by the same principles he was objecting to in the first place, but I wouldn't have done it. Mostly I find it amusing that he's so quick to jump on these comments when I don't really think anything was meant by them.

my highlight of the olympics: the opening cerimony seen from my balcony (my parents live a 15 mins walk from the olympic stadium). i went to see a couple of sports at the stadium but just for the sake of it since i'm not an olympic sports fan (i prefer soccer). for the rest it was a great 24\7 open air party. i've never seen athens in such a cheerful and happy mood. great stuff. it was the first time in my life that i passed august in athens and it was really worth it. for the rest not much to say really. everything went as planned, nobody bombed us or shot at the damn americans and finally greeks proved to the world that can pull through a great responsability pretty much like everyone else. so much for the foreign newspapers who predicted bloodsheds.
