Hello all.
In the spirit of the FB Forum Summer of Self-Mutilation, I decided to accidentally douse my face and other assorted areas in boiling water this morning.

Before you go denouncing my fanatical behavior, it was for a worthy cause (coffee)! ...my *French* press got cheeky with me.

Anyway, I was wondering if any of you gentle folk might have a secret (or not so secret) remedy for burns. Currently, I have a nice layer of neosporin and aloe all over my face. I've chosen to ignore the less painfull bits, like my wrist and neck. Any ideas? Any favorite over the counter products?

I figure this might also come in handy if anyone else here (heaven forbid) gets a masochistic urge before they've had their morning caffeine.

It's a cactus button. Not sure which one Frank is talking about with "the purple flowers of mescaline" line, though. Maybe just a different variety?

Just for the record, I was only talking about Vasoline for hand jobs, not sex you freaks, and I don't think that is dangerous at all.

Scahdenfreude --> instant karma?

Poor guy, but I just couldn't help laughing. It's the shape that's funny - I mean, pork chops. I wonder if he ever considered working them into a tattoo? Not to disguise them, but to emphasize them? Now that I think about it, the burn on my wrist is pork-chop-shaped, or maybe more South American, or a baby's foot? Weird.

What's weirder still is that I kinda dreamed the whole thing right before it happened (my incident, not your bro-in-law's).

Can't resist the Elastica allusion here, as unhip as it might be.

"When you need some goo..."

Use as directed.

Apl, hope yer not too badly disfigured. Damn, what a helluva way to start the day.

History tailgates.

I know a lady who whilst ironing naked ironed her tummy

I have a multitude of burns on my forearms from leaning against one too many balti dishes while they were too hot, and from reaching into freshly cooked autoclaves, mm purdy!

I don't mean to sound bitter, cold, or cruel, but I am, so that's how it comes out.

I am feeling a bit better today, thanks, pfeffa. It hurts a bit to type, due to the 3"x4" burn on my right arm/wrist.

Thanks Frog, but I have no idea what cactus you are talking about. If you mean peyote, yeah, I believe that would help me. ;)
...ahh, ok, did some looking. I think it must be prickly pear you meant? I do have some prickly pear fruit (yummy), but alas, no pads. Cacti are wonderful - lots of cultural background, eh?

Vasoline is pretty nasty stuff. Don't have a bit of that in the house. Let's try inventing Chindogu that use Vasoline!!

Actually, Vasoline is not supposed to be good for that, either.

I was gonna say that but I feared someone from the Vasoline Council would send me a nasty email.

So, what IS Vasoline good for??

A couple of years ago I used a cactus-based lotion to soothe a terrible sunburn, and it turned out to be extremely effective. I forgot its name but I know it's been used for generations by Navajos and Apaches, to cure all kinds of burns. I bought it in a Western state - Texas or New Mexico I believe - but IMO you should easily find it in Ohio...

Ah, there's burn spray which kinda helps. I thought Aloe helps. Or maybe Neosporin. Cold water is the best thing, but don't apply ice directly to the burn, just cold water.

Hey thanks for the kind words and advice everybody! It did hurt like hell, but I am much better today. That almost-boiling water hit all the fun parts - at least I had closed my eyes! The scariest thing was when some skin from the tip of my nose came off. Wheeee

I guess I kinda did a no-no, but it seemed to help. I had a big bowl of ice water and kept dipping paper towels into it and aplying to my face for about 20 minutes. Apparently you aren't supposed to keep a burn under water for very long because it can deplete your skin's natural oils and dry it out, making it harder to heal. But the cold water helped to stop the burn, so it's a juggling act. When we ran out of ice we had to wrap frozen bags of broccoli in dish towels, but that didn't really work so well. So far aloe and neosporin (topical antibiotic/pain reliever) are working pretty OK. If I had covered my burns with gauze, I would have looked just like the Invisible Man. heheh

I'm curious about the comfry-salve, ramona. I'll see what I can dig up and hopefully there's some in town. If you can remember anything about it, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks again, you guys are really sweet.

Here is some info on treatment of burns - For First-Degree Burns:

Remove clothing from burned area immediately.
Run cool water over the burned area or hold a clean, cold compress on the burn until pain subsides. (If water is not available, any cold, drinkable fluid can be used.) Do not use ice. Call your child's doctor for burns to the eyes, mouth, hands, and genital areas, even if they seem mild.
Do not apply butter, grease, powder, or any other remedies to the burn.
If the burned area is small, loosely cover it with a sterile gauze pad or bandage.

Here is a link to a warning on using Vaseline - http://www.abc.net.au/health/minutes/stories/s1006512.htm

I forget why but you aren't supposed to put Vaseline on a burn. I will look it up and post the reason, but it is definetly a NO NO.

Do you have any comfry salve around? It is very hippie-ish of me, but it works really well. I will try to find a link to that too.

Poor Apl!

Apply aloe vera gel, cover your face with cold, damp washcloths, stay in air conditioned rooms, and drink until you can't feel your face anymore.

(French presses are usually more well-behaved and produce superior coffee.)

Frank's band is better than your band. Sing it.

Ouch Apl, it must've hurt. Hope you're ok, those burns can keep on aching for some time.

I know of a very good burn dressing called Jellonet. Pretty much Tre's remedy in commercial form. I'm sure you'll find something alike at your chemist.
