FYI, at minimum the issues here are multiple instances of nepotistic-like hiring and abuse of power, not sexual orientation. And regarding McGreevey staying on till November 15, this is a clear Democrat attempt to thwart democracy, to which the GOP is quite right to object.
Republicans would never attempt to thwart Democracy (something you've gone on record as not being very fond of). They would clearly renounce having a Representative switch parties (from Democrat to Republican) minutes before a deadline, thus preventing a Democrat challenger.

Posted - 08/16/2004 : 12:51:18 If he resigns prior to Sep 15, the governor's slot will be on the Nov ballot. If not, his replacement, a Dem, will be acting-Gov for an additional year. Regardless of all the justifications offered, he wants to stay on long enough to avoid a vote this year, thereby ensuring the seat remains in Dem hands for an additional year. That's all I meant. To me this means depriving the people of an opportunity to vote, solely for the purpose of partisan advantage. The voters elected a person, not a party, and so now that this person has announced that he cannot effectively perform his duties, he should get out of the way and let the voters have their say. I know I don't have an iron-clad argument, for the state constitution permits him to linger as long as he wants, for whatever reason. |

Posted - 08/14/2004 : 10:01:13 Did McGreevey first say that he was resigning effective immediately? If so, I can see how people might be annoyed if he changed his mind. That doesn't have anything to do with democracy, though.

...Things like renewable energy, improved education, strengthening of social programs, alternatives to using military force. Can you come up with top ten ideas on any of these topics?
Yes. But that list wouldn't be as funny.

The GOP is of course calling for him to step down now.
Hope he stands his ground.

Posted - 08/13/2004 : 12:48:07 Pathetic. Once again, politicians' personal sexual lives are what people can and do like to talk about. Our time and energy should be focused on positive initiatives that will improve this country and its position in the world. Things like renewable energy, improved education, strengthening of social programs, alternatives to using military force. Can you come up with top ten ideas on any of these topics?
