Posted - 08/13/2004 : 09:49:32 Last night was the best, they rocked out...They started the show by saying "we've been writing a new song for each venue on this tour so here's "Richard's on Richards" and played an awesome tune, very funny, they actually played it again later in the set. They had the crowd doing the wave. they played a super fast version of "why does the sun shine?", 2 encores. Bliss. I think I'm going to have to skip Sebadoh tonight, I am hung to the tits...

It's been at least 10 years since TMBG has played Vancouver - long overdue. This show's crowd were very excited, rowdy and fun. The club tune, Richards, is really excellent and gets reprised with a clam-baked version in the middle. It's homage to the Cars and by the third time through the audience was singing alone to the chorus. Danny and his red pants were hidden from view by nature of a tiny stage and 20 feet of speakers placed directly in front of him. Really fun show to play and the recording came out great.
No edits on this one except for the long crowd applause between the encores. We even left in the Spin-the-Dial, which was less then stellar - all classical, talk radio and static. Canada needs some new radio.
While definitely in that club-loose feel, the band felt tight and fit after our week off - often it feels like we are the opposite of riding a bicycle, but this was a bicycle built for five.

Posted - 08/15/2004 : 14:37:29 i agree with vovat, the spine is very catchy. john henry was ver good but i found myself plugging in apollo 18 quite a bit even while JH was still new.

Posted - 08/14/2004 : 10:12:34 I actually thought The Spine was the easiest TMBG album to get into since Apollo 18. Not the BEST since Apollo 18, mind you--I love John Henry, but it took some time to get into. The Spine seems to be more along the lines of the short and instantly catchy stuff they were doing in the old days.

Posted - 08/14/2004 : 06:01:53 I'd like to see them live again, but they really need to focus on releasing a good album. Mink Car was kinda bad, but The Spine is soooooooo boring. I want another John Henry. |

They did a venue song at Celebrate Brooklyn, too. I really hope they release some kind of collection of these songs. You can buy downloads of the concerts, but not of individual tracks.
