Posted - 08/06/2004 : 20:37:53 (I'm not posting this to the General FB board cuz I know Frank himself reads that board and this post is too stupid for him to be seeing.)
Frank's the only rock n roll frontman I can think of who makes both hairloss and being chubby look cool.
I'm not fat, but my hair and my head don't like each other anymore. Four years ago when I first noticed my hair was falling out like so many autumn leaves (when I was a mere 23 years old), my reaction was a mix of discomfort and denial. It's a response one might have to any unexpected change. But after a short while -- 'bout a year -- I stopped caring.
And a big part of that is because Frank Black looks so cool as a bald guy. He doesn't seem to care. I shouldn't care, either. So I don't. At this point I could even afford to get plugs and maybe fix the "problem" entirely, but I'm not gonna. This is the way of nature. Don't fuss with it. Be a big confident man. Keep a good attitude and you'll be fine. Maybe shave it all off entirely, which I'll be doing soon
So, along with the songs and the shows and all that, this is another reason why I love Frank Black.
Thank you. |

I shaved my head yesterday. I now have no hair. My head shines. El Baldo. And I can't get over how cool it is. For a awhile I had anxiety about doing this, but I was wrong. I should have shaved my head a long time ago.
I've gotten two great compliments from women so far, and one of those women had a look in her eyes like she wanted to fuck me right that second.
So I feel just dandy right now.
Congrats, Jason, and thanks for proving my theory: women dig guys who have the balls to shave their heads. I rarely tell my husband what to do with his looks/clothes/self but for years I have been begging him to shave his head.
This is just one hetero woman's opinion: The shaved look just looks infinitely better than hair. Plus, I assume that only a self-confident cool guy would buck convention, stop moping about hair loss, embrace what is, and ... go bald.
I still believe in the excellent joy of the Frank |

2) Gay men are still men, and I've met some very manly gay guys who I'd bet fuck like jackhammers
3) he looks ill yes, but I'm pretty sure it's totally uncomfirmed and probably not true that he has HIV
4) he's had girlfriends, who's to say if he had HIV he didn't get it from them? Or from medical reasons!

erm, not to be too stalkery but he's been wearing a wedding ring again since early this summer. check out the concert pics. i wonder how being a stepdad will effect his life, and more importantly for me, his songwriting. but back on topic, i must agree that he is one sexy beast :) |

Posted - 08/09/2004 : 20:56:46 A random sampling of modern punk and metal groups turns up lots of clean-shaved heads so I can't agree 100% that bald is totally unacceptable in rock. HOWEVER, Frank's the only rock guy I know of who I think actually succeds in looking cool that way and whose (imposing) presence is enhanced by his baldness... and I do say that knowing that I'm a totally biased fanboy.
Billy Corgan is too whiny for me to relate to. Michael Stipe is too effeminate for me to relate to. Kyle Gass is in Tenacious D, who I don't care about. The only bald guy in the Ebb Vicious list that I like is Andy Partridge, but doesn't he always wear a hat? I need my bald role models to let their heads shine for all to see. |

Posted - 08/09/2004 : 16:51:18 Of course, let's be serious, if you were as talented as FB, would you even care what random people have to say about you? If sweet Frank DOES read these, then, I will have to admit I think he's totally, awesomely sexy because of his talent. Too bad he's married :( If he wants to PM me, that would be cool. Ha! (where is that pic of me again?)
Actually, if anyone wants to PM me, that would be cool, too. I am kind of lonely and my life is falling apart. sigh...I need some hugs

Posted - 08/09/2004 : 13:55:44 Hell no, I look like Brad Pitt with a bald head, which is still a hell of a lot better looking than you. And of course I am fitter. And funnier. And more talented. And.......oh I could go on but I don't want to make you any more insecure than you already are.
Oh and I have only heard of 2 of those above, meaning the rest are worthless. As for those two, well they were far from bald when they 'made it', which was partly my point with the Frank thing.

Posted - 08/09/2004 : 13:49:06 there are lots of great bald rock stars besides frank.
+ billy corgan + kyle gass + andy partridge + michael stipe + neil peart might as well be with those silly hats >_<
and those are just ones i can think of off the top of my head by mentally perusing my cd book on the shelf in my office.

Posted - 08/09/2004 : 13:41:25 Trust me Carolynanna, nothing has changed. It's just a little shorter now with less perming.
All these new garage rock bands are the worst for it now, The Strokes being a good example. I could do a list but it would go on forever.

Posted - 08/09/2004 : 11:55:57 I don't know, there is a samson-rock thing going, my uni friend worrys that he loses all his rock credentials as soon as he shaves his head, but he looks a bit spivvy with hair so it's prolly for the best. And I only get to hear him play when he's trollied so I can't vouch for that.

Posted - 08/09/2004 : 11:01:39 Hey fellow baldy!
I know what you mean, but to be perfectly honest with you, bald people will never be truly accepted in rock 'n' roll. Frank get's away with it 'cos he did not start out bald and 'cos he is the greatest rock 'n' roll star ever. Sadly rock has always been about the hair.

BF (Before Frank), what cool heavy guys did you have in rock? MEAT LOAF?! Maybe The Big Bopper was chunky. Not sure. David Thomas makes great music, but he seems a little too bitchy for me to wanna BE like.
And most rockers wear wigs or get plugs/transplants when they lose their hair (imagine a band like KISS without their wigs!). Not many cool rocker guys flaunt their natural baldness (meaning I'm not counting the fashionable head-shaving you often see in bands today). Maybe one could make a case for Brian Eno, but I prefer Frank's more down-to-earth persona. |
