Posted - 07/31/2004 : 19:29:01 I have an Archos Jukebox and I lurve it. It's not as small and fancy as an iPod and it doesn't hold as much but I have over 100 CD's on it and it is not even half full. I am not a girl with 8 million CD's so an iPod seemed silly for me. Plus, I don't have a Mac AND the Archos was a lot cheaper - like $200.
Anyway, I don't know too much about the differences between MP3 players, but I like mine very much.

Posted - 07/31/2004 : 18:24:00 iPod, no contest. I tell customers there's two categories of MP3 players...the iPod, and everybody but the iPod. Best MP3 player, everyone's just trying to be the iPod but they can't compete with the quality (both construction and sound) and easy of use.
The whole "battery failing after 18 months" is a myth. One person's battery failed and they through a shit fit and made a big stink about it. Now Apple charges $100 for battery replacement. If I were you, I'd buy the iPod at Best Buy and get the replacement plan or service plan on it (replacement plan is $40 for 2 years for the 20GB, service plan is $40 for 4 years for the 40GB). A little money goes a long way.
I guess I just wasn't made for these times. |

Posted - 07/31/2004 : 17:37:57 I own a Dell Digital Jukebox (15 gb) and an old Nomad.
The Nomad I've had for years, just upgraded the hard-drive to 80 gb before Christmas. It doesn't keep a charge very long, but I've got it sitting in my bedroom.
You can get a used one with a trashed hard-drive cheap on eBay and drop in a new beefy HD. It doesn't have USB 2.0.
The Dell is very small and plays a long time, but has a funny looking battery inside the screwed case, and a very expensive type of mini-HD (It would cost a fortune to upgrade). I wouldn't have bought it, but I'm happy to have been given it and use it daily.
The Dell uses the crappiest MusicMatch software (I have a decade long aversion to) and only has drivers for XP and 2000. I found I could use the Windows Multi-Media Player to put music on. I'm not sure if MusicMatch will let you take music off. It's USB 2.0, very fast.
I hate MP3's, but I can't carry my whole CD collection around. What kills me is the time compression, the ear can not distinguish sounds that happen close together in time. What bullshit is that, everything becomes as dull and lifeless as a <insert a producer to deride here> recording.

Thanks for the help.

I'm thinking either the iPod, Dell Jukebox (forget it's name) or the NOMAD.
It's alot of money for a walkman!

Posted - 07/31/2004 : 10:59:24 I would recommend the newest iPod that just hit the market if that's what you want. Don't buy it if it's the older version with the 4 function buttons and shuttle pad. Get the one with the tocuh pad shuttle. It's been reduced in price and has a better battery.

I also recommenr Archos products. I am currently running an older (1.5 years) Archos Jukebox Studio and it is great. Cross platform. Easy organization in folders. Compatible with iTunes. I know they have some amazing new ones out now.

Are those bastards still in business? Back in the late '90s they used to make the shittiest computers on the market. We used to get support calls at Earthlink. As soon as the customer told me they just bought a Packard Bell, I'd know they didn't have a clue.

Definitely iPod
If you get an iPod, understand that the battery will not hold a charge after 18 months. Now, my Creative NOMAD Jukebox 3, on the other hand, has been going strong for over 2 years. The NOMAD is kinda big & clunky though. iPods are definitely sexier. You could always go for a Creative Zen, which is an iPod rip-off. I'd bet that the Zen's battery outlasts the iPod's.
