Volvos are way more expensive here too, even the older models, so that's probably not the best comparison. I seem to remember seeing them for about the same price here when we were looking. They are the little Mac trucks of the car world - they last forever and are very safe, so not much depreciation.

You Americans are lucky chaps. Cars appear to be mucho more expensive here in the UK.
My 1997 Volvo was £8,250 when I bought it two years ago. (About $15,000)
Couple that to our sky-high petrol prices and you'd wince at the running cost of a car in this country.
(It cost me **taps on calculator** £56.60 in petrol to go and see the Pixies in Brixton - gulp)

Think I've decided against leasing thanks to some further research and you guys' advice. Got my eye on a 2002 Saturn SL 2 with 40,000 miles on it going for $8,000. From what I've read they seem to be the most valuable non-foreign sedan. thanks fo the tips. |

$8,500 - used corporate fleet car. Got it with 12K miles.

This is why I never performed any maintenance on my 1992 Plymouth Sundance, which I drove until it finally died last year. I figured that if I let the oil and antifreeze leak all over the engine, it would effectively seal all cracks in the manifold, engine block, transmission, etc. once it burned off. Just like seasoning a skillet. 145,000 miles ain't too bad.

you'll have to get a trustworthy mechanic to look for cracks, if you go to a chrysler dealership, they will know what to look for, and will probably put it on the hoist and have a look for free, especially if you are doing an oil change or something at the same time.
a manifold looks like this and attaches to the rear of the engine, look for cracks at the tube welds.

We just recently bought a certified used 2000 honda accord with 38K miles. It was about $4000 less than the comparable model at other dealerships, and about half of the new price. Just depends on what they think it's worth, and that can vary widely. Try to identify the model of car you want and then start shopping dealerships. Tip of the Day: Deal with the Internet Sales Manager - they operate purely on volume versus commission based on sales price.
Leasing can work, but I have worked with people who got screwed as their office location moved halfway through the lease and forced them to blow the mileage cap, which got expensive. Plus, I like having an asset to sell if I need to. The per-month isn't that distant in most cases.

My ex bought a 98 Toyota Corolla which I believe used to be a rental. I can't remember how much she paid for it but it's a nice car...drives really nicely, but again, I don't know shit about cars.
Thanks for the tip, shine...I'll check into it. What do I look for?

We bought a Geo Prism from Enterprise rental cars and have been happy with it (it's a dinky car but hasn't needed any substantial repairs for the 4 years we've had it), but you're right Bartholomew not many rental companies use Hondas or Toyotas (even though the Geo was built by Toyota).
I don't think leasing is often a good deal. |

Easy car to maintain El Barto, however, if you are going on a road trip make sure you check the exhaust manifold before you go, early to mid 90's chryslers(shadow,spirit,cirrus,stratus,neon etc.) are notorious. the part is not that expensive ($150-200) it is the labour that kills, lots of hours.

I just bought a used 95 Dodge Spirit with a V6 and 65500 miles on it for $2700 after tax title and license fees. Really nice fuckin car. I just need to learn how to maintain it. I was looking at leasing or buying, but A) buying was way out of the question, and B) leasing was a little "iffy" because I'm personally in limbo right now, and I don't know if I'll have steady income during the entire lease period. But $100 a month was pretty attractive (was looking at a Stratus or PT Cruiser). I guess I can look into that more when I grow up...
I guess I just wasn't made for these times. |

ObfuscateByWill, you're a mind-reader! that was my original plan and they do have good prices on focus, cavalier, and escorts, but I want reliability... The Corolla's and Civic's are only $1,000 less than new. And begeegs, the reason I'm looking into leasing is because every car I've ever bought has been worth nothing buy the time I finish paying it off. So why not lease and end up with nothing, same boat I'm in now, if it's cheaper? |

You could probably get a 2002-2003 model at a good price.

Not looking for any kind of super-cool car. I would actually prefer to spend less bucks and buy used but the 2 cars I am looking for, either a Toyota Corolla or a Honda Civic depreciate so little that a 15-25,000 miles model goes for almost the same as new. I need reliable. I need four doors (family man, you know). |

Only lease if one of these is true:
a)you can write off the payments (business car)
b)you don't want to keep your car very long
c)you absolutely have to
d)you're getting a 993 turbo or something totally awesome
