Ah, funk. Funk is great. I love Funkadelic. My dad has been telling me stories of seeing them live and being the only white guy there. He just hung in the back and almost left when George Clinton started talking about "Killing Whitey!", hahaha. It makes me laugh.

But I love the music. The guitarist for Funkadelic sounds a LOT like Hendrix, and I'm pretty sure he was before Hendrix. Some amazing stuff. The bassist, too, Bootsy Collins, was amazing. I never really got into the Parliament stuff, but it's not bad.

Funk is a beautiful thing.

James is definitely on my list. Cheers for the suggestion!

I've never really been much of a funkman, but now I am in a funk band with no point of reference which out to be interesting..

I just bought Funkadelics 1st couple of records as well as Sly and the Family Stone. I tell you what it ought bring my bass skills up about 500 notches (I don't play bass)

You guys ever read that Onion article about Hootie and the Blowfish inadvertently summoning The Mothership during a concert?
It was dam funny - can't get it now, they want you to pay for the archives.

Favorite George Clinton quote:
Someone had asked him why P-Funk had agreed to do a particular show - may have been one of the woodstock shows.
His response?
"Cause it was a gig, man and they was gon' let us bring our spaceship!"

Hell yeah.

Man, oh man oh man.
It is sacriledge to quote an awful 80's pop metal band in the context of a P-Funk discussion.

You guys remember Bootsy in the Dee-Lite tune - "Groove is in the Heart"?
Bootsy Collins owns all.

I saw James Brown supporting the Chilli Peppers in Hyde Park last week. That man has more funk in the tip of his little finger than the Chilis have had in their entire career. I'd recommend the live experience, its just a huge party, even though he's 76(!)

Kind regards,
Simon

All I can say is, any band with that much cred that also has one of its members in a diaper every show is alright by me!

P-Funk rules! I entered a battle of the bands with a one-off ensemble called the Fee-Punk Experience. In tribute to their wacky stage outfits, I wore a pink dress and put my hair in pigtails. We did "Mommy, What's a Funkadelic" & "Red Hot Mama", along with some James Brown. The gig was a blast, but then they put the whole show on local cable for a month. I had everyone who came into the video store I managed at the time saying "Didn't I see you in a dress?" I told `em it was my sister. We did win the battle of the bands, BTW. Paint the White House black!

That guitarist would be Eddie Hazel, and Maggot Brain is his signature tune. "Mother Earth is pregnant for the third time, for yah'll have knocked her up." Jeez, it's been a long time since I heard that. I'm not even sure that's what is said, but it's close.

For me, Funkadelic will always be their first album, since that was the one I bought when I was 14 years old. Love those good-old funk songs like "Mommy, What's a Funkadelic?" and "I Bet You".

the Mothership, a Nitrous Oxide tank, a big bag of dope, and a case of beer...

ah, I wish I wasn't 27 when I was 17, or something like that?

Pick up "Maggot Brain". I've got in on LP and it's amazing. Wonderful stuff. And yeah, hilarious sense of humor!

Hey Crouton, what Funkadelic albums would you recommend for starters? I love what I've heard, but that's no more than about 3 songs.

Jason Posted - 07/03/2004 : 11:09:51
I'm getting into this stuff, too.

The past few days I've been rockin' out with side 1 of the Isley Brothers' The Heat is On album. It starts off with "Fight the Power" (more well-known these days through Public Enemy's re-working of it) and the rest of that side sets your room on fire with some similarly sweaty funk.

I only want the Funkadelic albums on vinyl. Whenever I see them around they're real expensive so I haven't bought any and have yet to even hear them, but I have managed to procure a 1975 Funkadelic's Greatest Hits LP and it's pretty incredible. Just real fun, unpredictible music, with a great sense of humor.
