I've thought of the laptop route and am undecided which is the only real reason I've not gone ahead and bought this thing. That said, a large part of the reason I love this particular piano is the feel. The way it plays. Yeah, the piano sound is fantastic, but it also feels like a piano, and that's really important when you're trying to put some feeling into the music. For some songs, I could get by with a $200 keyboard with no touch sensitivity. If I were only doing synth stuff, then that'd be enough. Certainly my WK-1800 is far over qualified for that job. For other songs, I'd like a piano that I can work my fingers on, y'know. It's difficult to explain how feel makes a difference, but it does and it's huge... I suppose it's like someone wanting a guitar that gets a certain tone or maybe it's also true of guitars that certain ones feel 'easy' and comfortable and others not as much. Finally, I'm moving out of my home eventually and I really will miss not having an acoustic piano or at least something that feels like one.
But the good thing with a laptop and a good USB sound solution is that it would also let us record in the garage without me hauling my desktop from the house. And it would probably give me the power to do some more complicated stuff on stage, loops, samples, etc. What software are you using? So many tough choices.
Andy/LBF, I'd love to hear/see your one man band. Though I must admit that I'm actually not in a one-man band. Speedy M (Mike) and I have been working together for a couple years and now we have a drummer and bassist (since this winter), a few shows under our belt, and a website. FB.Net watch out! :)

Those things are awesome! I bought myself a couple recently. They're a great thing to throw into a recording...adds a lot.

Posted - 06/30/2004 : 05:30:44 Nice to see that there are more one-man-bands here. I've given up performing alone though, got me a band. Bought a Farfisa organ at a flea-market for 30$, which is outstanding. Gonna buy a new guitar this weekend - thinking of buying a telecaster. And I need a good accoustic for recording, i fell while playing my old fender acc and broke the neck. Posted - 06/29/2004 : 12:35:36 I recently found a Peavy 15 watt guitar amp at a pawn shop for $25. It works perfectly. I didn't really need it I guess, but I couldn't pass it up...

Posted - 06/29/2004 : 08:34:17 I've recently bought an accordian--a $300 Sophia Maria, only 32 of the chord keys, but I'm still very much in the learning stage so I guess it will do for a "starter" accordian, for now at least. Right now I can play "Just Another Sucker on the Vine" by Tom Waits (which is a Harmonium song but you can play it on the accordian) and "Particle Man" by They Might be Giants.
I also bought recently a Schoenhut toy piano which sounds really cool and will be very useful for recording purposes.

Posted - 06/29/2004 : 07:43:46 I've been looking at a new keyboard for a while. Actually, an electric piano. The problem is that I tend to switch instruments at least once during many songs and:
a) Not many electric pianos have a good library of patches. b) Those that do tend to make them fairly inaccessible.
There's a $3000 Yamaha I've been looking at though that's just weighted perfectly, sounds absolutely authentic, and is pretty overall nice, but suffers from a serious dose of b. Maybe I'll have to buy a second new keyboard as a controller or use my old one. But I still have a lot to learn about MIDI...

Posted - 06/28/2004 : 23:57:37 Not too terribly long ago I bought a mandolin. And I don't know how to play it yet. Thing is... I was one of those "I sing in a band" people that didn't know how to play instruments other than kinda sorta some stuff on guitar but not really. But I can play kazoo. Yep. *AHEM* I can run a sound board like it's nobody's bidness... but I digress... after the band stint was over, I just started painting.
Anyways, I got the mandolin thinking it might be a place to start. But the middle finger on right hand is still crumped up from where I broke it a couple of years ago. And I just can't seem to compensate for it yet.
And all I can think is... man. That dude in Def Leppard lost a frikkin' arm and he still plays drums. And I'm over here whining 'bout my messed up finger.
Anyways. Yeah. I bought a mandolin not too long ago...
