Okay then. I guess it was kinda suggested to make this a topic all of it's very own. So here it is. Cover tunes, cover tunes... hrmmm... and what were they thinking...

Thinking one of my all time favorite covers is the Swans version of "Love Will Tear Us Apart." Kinda feel like they did that one justice.
On the scarey side... whatever in the H E double matchsticks they did to "How Soon Is Now?" for the dreadful TV show about witches just... well... *SHUDDER*

I remember the band, Catherine Wheel, doing a cover of Mission of Burma which is fair enough....

The problem is that later on, I read Rob Dickinson admiting that their manager gave them a tape of obscure bands so they could cover them and I felt ill....Basically trying to gain indie cred....That's the stuff I hate.

I do remember 10,000 Maniacs doing a great cover of Peace Train a while ago.

Camper Van Beethoven's cover songs are usually good.

I can handle it a bit from Christina Aguilera because like it or not the girl has an amazing voice but even she takes it to far and she unlike many of the ones doing it actually has the voice to make it work. At least Avril hasn't tried this shit as far as I know, I respect that about her the girl can't sing and she doesn't try to fake it, she just gets the job done in her pop songs and doesn't try to be flashy.

Elf Power! Love those guys. Great great stuff, to be sure. I'm particularly fond of their cover of "Felt Good To Burn" by the Flaming Lips.

Oh geeze... gender swapping in cover tunes. That's a fun one. Was at a bar here some time ago and this gal was doing a cover of "Roxanne" by the Police. And she changed the gender in all of it except for the name "Roxanne."

Mebbe it was the beer, mebbe it was something else. But I spent a whole lot of time giggling through/after that one. In fact, the flashbacks have me grinning again right now. It must not have been just the beer.

Tori Amos' cover of "Happiness Is A Warm Gun" is pretty bad. And I usually like her music.

I think changing gender-specific words when doing a cover generally comes off as pretty cheesy. Yet even They Might Be Giants did it, in their cover of "Maybe I Know." I'm glad the Pixies DIDN'T change the genders when Kim sang lead on "I've Been Waiting For You."

Richard Hell and the Voidoids covers of "Walking on the Water" and "All the Way" are both brilliant.

Anyone know the Squirrels? A novelty act that makes Weird Al look like the mediocre twit he is. They covered Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety. They play Pink Floyd's Money and Barrett Strong's Money (That's What I Want) at the same time! And it works. Awesome. (Especially considering that PF's is in 7/4. They just drop off the last half beat of the other.) They also do other screwy things like singing Johnny B Good to the tune of When Johnny Comes Marching Home and a great medley of stuff from the Wizard of Oz.

Speaking of Money (That's What I Want), whose version is best? I like the Sonics with the Kingsmen a close second. And (gasp) Josie and the Pussycats (from the movie) is quite respectable. (Yeah, I know it was actually an uncredited real band.)

Heard a pretty interesting version of Radiohead's "Creep" as sung by Robert Smith. Most enjoyable.

Oh Ho Monkey Boy... After half an hour of frantic searching in my CD singles Box I found the Abba Esque EP! I put it on REAL LOUD!

I am now dedicating this one woman Karaoke dancing round her flat in her pyjamas to YOU!

I wasn't jealous before we met/ Now every woman I see is a potential threat/ And I'm possessive it isn't nice/ You've heard me saying that smoking was my only vice/ But now it isn't true/ Now everything is new/ And all I've learned has overturned/ I beg of you.../ Don't go wasting your emotion/ Lay all your love on meeeeeeeeeeee/ Don't go sharing your devotion/ Lay all your lov on meeeeee/ It was like shooting a sitting duck/ A little small talk, a smile and baby I was stuck/ I still don't know what you've done with me/ A grown - up woman should never fall so easily/ I feel a kind of fear/
When I don't have you near/ Unsatisfied, I skip my pride
I beg you dear.../ Don't go wasting your emotion/ Lay all your love on me/ Don't go sharing your devotion/ Lay all your love on me/I've had a few little love affairs/ They didn't last very long and they've been pretty scarce/ I used to think that was sensible
It makes the truth even more incomprehensible/'Cause everything is new/ And everything is you/ And all I've learned has overturned
What can I do.../

Don't go wasting your emotion
Lay all your love on MEEEEEE
Don't go sharing your devotion
Lay all your love on MEEEEE

and that was most definately *sung in a camp electronic styleeeeeeeee*

Homers_pet_monkey Posted - 06/29/2004 : 13:31:48
Tre, as long as you don't add this bit, *sing in a camp electronic styleeeeeeeee*, then I just imagine the original. And I like Abba.

This song kicks ass, and is begging for some sort of DJ Club mix.
