Posted - 06/26/2004 : 20:19:40 I had Pernod for the first time tonight. Wow. I've read about it, but I never thought it would be so delicious. It's an anise (licorice) flavored liquor that is the legal version of absinthe (causes hallucinations). Has anyone else tried this?

Posted - 06/28/2004 : 09:05:03 In my boozing years I used to move onto Pernod and Blacks (with concentrated blackurrant) when I'd had enough of pints. Fell asleep in toilets a couple of times - once on my knees thinking I was going to heave. When I woke and stood up, my legs folded beneath me and I crumpled in a heap. No feeling in my legs. Full of pins and needles. Literally couldn't walk. So I sat down 'for a minute', and fell asleep again. Next time I woke up the lights were off and I was locked in the building for the night. Think that was the last time I drank Pernod. |

Pernod, Ricard and 51 are said to be the favorite drinks of the beaufs (French rednecks)... but I must confess I enjoy them, especially in the summer.

What is wormwood, and where do I get it?
Wormwood is an herb, a decorative plant, and a medicinal. http://www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/w/wormwo37.html "Medicinal Action and Uses---Tonic, stomachic, febrifuge, anthelmintic.
A nervine tonic, particularly helpful against the falling sickness and for flatulence. It is a good remedy for enfeebled digestion and debility."
You can get it from your local greenhouse store - sometimes they have the right variety in the landscaping plants or perennials section. You can buy it online as well.

The pastis tastes like absinth but has nothing to do with it. Real absinth used to make you go crazy - but a modified version of it exists now, and is entirely legal.
Otherwise, you can always have the good old window cleaner. |

Posted - 06/28/2004 : 06:07:08 I guess if you like black licorice, you'll like Pernot, Ouzo, etc. If you don't then it's not for you. I wonder if it tastes better with sugar. There are all sorts of exotic absinthe spoons used to infuse the drink with sugar, hence The Sugarcubes.

Posted - 06/27/2004 : 12:55:41 i tried absinthe a week or so ago. no hallucinations but i felt like i had a monkey jumping inside my head, pretty weird feeling. maybe i had a bit too much but i wanted to show off since i am pretty used at anise flavoured drinks(see ouzo). the french pastis is cool too, maybe too alcoholic though.

Recipe?
Why soitenly!
EZ-at-Home-Absinthe:
1. Wrap your head in tight gauze.
2. Lock up all cutting implements.
3. Mix 1 dry ounce wormwood (real) to 2 fl oz alcohol (Chambord is fun, if you don't like anise/licorice-flavored liqueur). Soak (a few weeks), strain, enjoy.
4. Watch out for the fuzz, and the giant moths. |

Posted - 06/26/2004 : 20:53:55 There are a few places in the world (London being one of them) where you can still buy real absinthe over-the-bar. Interesting to people-watch in there, in addition to the drinking - especially if you can handle your wormwood (a lot of folks, apparently, can't).
Back in Ohio, tonight it's vodka, pomegranite juice, and club soda in a 5:1:5 mix, repectively (a.k.a. I showed 12 oz of diluted vodka some juice before I drank it)
