So Jello Biafra is doing spoken word in Columbus, OH this weekend, an hour per day, at Comfest (a non-corporate community festival staffed by volunteers). I grabbed a snippet of his speech with our handy digital camera, and thought I would share.

Edit: Ok for some reason the link-through isn't working in as stellar a fashion as I had hoped, so you will have to right-click(win/linux) or ctrl-click(mac) and save locally to play. No idea why that happened, but there we are.

The man in action

Looking forward to tomorrow's show!

i met jello biafra some years ago at a concert in bologna. actually it was one of the coolest things that have ever happened to me. i arrived early to the venue and i wanted a poster so i asked kindly to the ticket guy for one but he told me that there weren't left any. so i asked if i could take one of those appended on the walls(there were dozens of them). that piece of shit would not let me have i told him something rude and when he turned his back i took a couple of them and went to have a pizza before the gig. i was having that pizza and a beer and who steps into the place? jello biafra in person. anyway i introduced myself and we got to chat (politics mainly). he then asked me and a friend to give him a hand to put some stuff on the stage (it was a spoken word thing) and to control that noone stole his books before his arrival(he had an autographed copy of tipper gore's book dedicated "to jello for a better world together" or something similar). i will never forget the face of that prick that wouldn't let me have the poster when he saw me arrive with jb and had to let me in without paying. anyway after the gig we continued our chat, i met winston smith and it was the coolest thing. i even convinced jb to let me have a copy of "terminal city ricochet" a film that never got out but unfortunately he had only betamax tapes of it that i couldn't use. whatever.
jello rocks.

Thanks Spud, I'll certainly follow your advice.

Uh-oh, I've just found this at http://www.mojonixon.com:

MOJO NIXON PROCLAIMS: "I HAVE NOTHING MORE TO SAY. I AM DONE."

-MOJO NIXON TO PERFORM FINAL CONCERT MARCH 20 AT CONTINENTAL CLUB IN AUSTIN DURING ANNUAL SXSW PARTY-

Pigfoot, Louisiana- March 2004-Mojo Nixon, has announced that on March 20, 2004 he will perform his final concert at the Continental Club in Austin Texas. Rumors have been circulating about Nixon's retirement for some time and Nixon finally confirmed this will indeed be his final performance.

"I have nothing more to say," says Nixon. "Not only am I empty, but obviously nobody gives a rat's ass about the things I have been saying for twenty years. The masses are just as blinded by the light of stupidity, prudery and the shiny objects of hate."

Performing in Houston on March 18 and Austin on March 20 Nixon will cap a 20-year career that spawned such mega-hits as: "Elvis Is Everywhere;" "Don Henley Must Die;" "Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant With My Two-Headed Luv Child;" "Stuffin Marthas Muffin;" "I Hate Banks;" "Bring Me The Head Of David Geffen" and "I Saw Jesus At McDonald's At Midnight."

Nixon's recording career encompassed more than a dozen albums and included a country album with punk icon Jello Biafra, a Las Vegas showroom big band with Dave Alvin and the late Country Dick Montana, a Triple X rated XXX-Mas album and more social commentary than the American people could swallow.

"He has been on the cover of the Wall Street Journal, he has appeared nude in magazines, he has been in bad movies, been censored by Hustler magazine, three record companies and MTV, he played every possible music joint where nutjobs congregate in 45 states, he even played in Moosejaw, Saskatchewan and did a three-week tour of Norway," says longtime manager Scott Ambrose "Bullethead" Reilly. "He has suffered death threats; he sang with Don Henley; he has even been an answer on Jeopardy for God's Sake. He was the captain of a US Olympic team and debated Pat Buchanan. For us. He did this all for us."

"I have debased your false icons, mocked the myths and tried to shine the light of truth and freedom on the Big Lies" says Nixon. "I have done all I can."

Following in the tradition set forth by entertainers such as Frank Sinatra, The Who, Kiss, David Bowie, Judy Garland, Michael Jordan and George Foreman, Nixon decided to end his career with one final tour and a final date at his favorite and most frequent concert venue, The Continental Club in Austin, Texas. Once called "America's greatest living poet" by the Austin Chronicle following a Continental Club performance in 1987 Nixon decided it would be the fitting venue for his final performance. Nixon will host a full day of music beginning at 10 am and will take the stage with his band, The Toadliquors, at 5 pm for the final performance of his career.

Over the course of two decades Nixon toured or performed shows with artists ranging from Butthole Surfers, Koko Taylor, Soul Asylum, Allen Ginsburg, Dead Milkmen, Ali Farka Toure, Dead Kennedys, Buddy Guy, The Pogues, Del Lords, Violent Femmes, NRBQ, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Hitler, Meat Puppets, David Bromberg, Mike Watt, The Beat Farmers, Einstuerzende Neubauten and Camper Van Beethoven.

Nixon has been a candidate for President in the previous four presidential elections under the Mushroom Party banner. In describing his absence from this year's political events Nixon says, "Hell, I got a J-O-B. I got nothing new to say, no one cares, the road will kill me. The road will surely kill me. I can do no more."

Nixon will retire to Coronado, California where he will be an on-air personality for classic rock station KGB. "Isn't 10 albums enough?" asks Nixon.

Well it can vary I suppose, depending on what filth you've been eating..but it SHOULD be brown. Unless we have that wrong too.

I guess that Spud Alert post wasn't so necessary after all.

Well, we have yet to meet Crouton (although a spot of good weather and we might), but apl and I live under the same roof, so we have indeed met. We're in the NW too.

Ok, so spudboy, crouton, and apl4ris all live near Columbus? I was at the stinky hippy fest today, too.

I live NW of the city. We're probably all neighbors? Do you know each other?

Here's an interesting interview with Jello regarding his involvement in the festival this year, from the local "Alive" free paper:

I'm still not sure how I feel about his performance yesterday. After we see him again today I'll try to summarize my thoughts on it.

Crouton: In the surrounding perimiter of Columbus.

Frog: If you liked that record, I highly recommend getting the Mojo Nixon & Skid Roper work, or anything with his band the Toadliquors. "Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant With My Two Headed Love Child" is a classic.

I don't really know this guy nor his music but I bought one of his albums, 'Prairie Home Invasion', in the mid-90's. He wrote and recorded it with Mojo Nixon. I still consider it one of the most surprising albums I've heard so far - exactly halfway between punk rock and country music. Surprising, I tell ya.
Most of the songs are very catchy - especially those written by Nixon - and their lyrics (no to mention their titles: 'Love Me I'm A Liberal', 'Mascot Mania', 'Let's Go Burn Ole Nashville Down') are certainly among the funniest ever.

The link streamed for me. You must've fixed it.

Pretty good speech, even more impressive is that the audience was sort of paying attention.
