Posted - 06/21/2004 : 13:55:53 Well, I had the extremely good fortune of seeing Shellac play in Nashville last Saturday night, and it was one of the better live shows I have seen in some time. Any band that can completely drag you into their set and make you forget who and where you are is well worth seeing live. One of the more amusing parts of the night was when Steve Albini broke a guitar string and the band decided to have a Q&A session with the audience while the guitar string was replaced. My favorte of these was: Audience Member: Why are you all wearing black? Answer: It's serendipity.

Posted - 06/22/2004 : 01:08:40 I was lucky enough to see them play twice in one day at ATP earlier on this year. now, i'm not actually much of a fan of them, and don't own any of their cd's, but they were pretty damn good. the first show which was at 12pm on the sunday was fantastic...they played in this small room and it was packed but my friend and i had a spot standing on the soundboard, so we were about 2ft above everyones heads. apparently they played lots of old stuff, but of course i didn't know that. my favourite bit was the 12minutes of bass and drums just playing the same thing with steve doing some dancing...very bizarre.
whereas their main gig that night was average....
they apparently do the Q&A thing at pretty much every show - we got 2 that day.
the recordings i got of the firsat show and the one later that week from amsterdam are pretty damn good too....thanks martin!

Posted - 06/21/2004 : 15:58:12 I saw them a few years ago when they miraculously played LA (I had to go to San Francisco to see Big Black because Albini refused to play southern California). They were great. Todd Trainer looks like a living human skull but damn he hits the drums like his life depends on it! I loved the matching guitar and bass amps, each with an analog VU meter and ONE LARGE KNOB. |

To the one true god above... here is my prayer... not the first you heard... but the first I wrote... not the first but the others... were a long time ago.. there are to people here and I want you to kill them.... Genius

Posted - 06/21/2004 : 14:03:58 Oh yeah... Prayer To God! They did play Prayer to God and it was great. A goodly portion of the crowd sang along to this one. To me this would indicate that most people know exactly what it feels like to be wholly betrayed in love by someone in which you had placed your faith and trust. And whereas, we as mere mortals do not by law have the right to exact our vengeance by way of slaughtering those who have wounded us , we can indeed offer up a prayer to the reigning deity and kinda hope that he/she just kinda takes care of all of that for us.
*GIGGLING* Oh... something about that many souls singing "Kill him, just kill him, kill already kill him" was just one of the best things I have ever seen.

Posted - 06/21/2004 : 13:58:53 I love shellac.. I heard them for the first time in bed listening to John Peel, my ex went out the next day and bought 10,000 hurts and I was not long buying it after him. Prayer to god is just amazing in it's simplicity. I love the lyrics
