A Francis Bacon painting is being displayed at the Tate Gallery in London . The work is on loan from a museum in Tehran where it has been stored away in their vault for years.

Anyone on here likes FB? His work is incredibly powerful.A friend turned me on to his work when I visited London a few years ago. His biography, The Gilded Gutter Life of Francis Bacon, is a very good read as well.

I couldn't really claim to have valid opinions on art, I don't really consider myself well enough informed to comment. However, that said I like these pictures very much.
The pictures that struck me the most recently (again in the Tate) were some illustrations by William Blake.

There can pretty much be no doubt that Francis Bacon just kicks ass, in general. His imagery is coming from some place very powerful and potent. Love his work.

interesting... I always struggle to find art I really like.. I find most of it really uninspiring. I liked van gough, not so mych for the content of the painting but for the chunky-ness of it, I liked that he'd use the paints all thick. I like man with dog.
can't get into anything these days. Always on the peripheral. Always terrified, exhausted, annoyed, pissed, anxious, out of it-out of the loop, out of my mind, out of time.

Lots more, but I haven't had any sleep and can't think straight.
I am wracking my brain, There is an incredible artist that did many b&w prints/drawings usually with a white glove in them. Some fantastical creatures in some as well. i loved his work, now I can't remember for the life of me. I think his first name may have been Max...

And apl4eris, if you haven't yet read The Gilded Gutter Life you should try and get it. It was also made into a film Love Is The Devil, which wasn't too bad.

No, it wasn't his self-portrait, I remember it had "dog" in the title, it really looked like a dog face, with some humn traits - the muzzle was long....and it was a sculpture. Ah well.
I had forgotten just how much I liked his work.

The first Bacon I saw at the Tate had this strange pink background with this weird figure in the middle. It was a portrait of a ladyfriend of his. It made me feel uncomfortable but I couldn't stop watching at it. The freakishness of his work always shakes me up.
Maybe you saw his self portrait?

Here's a painting called "Man with Dog" that might have been from the same period, I'll take it down soon, as it's so big:
I have never seen sewer grates in his work before - I used to have them in a lot of my work. Strange again. |

Yeah I like his work quite a lot, offerw. I had a weird experience with a Francis Bacon *sculpture* in the Tate when I visited years ago. Basically, the night before, I was about to fall asleep in the hostel, and in that pre-dream state, I had a very vivid moving-image of the subway, strange greenish flourescent lighting, and leaning against a curved grey/white-tiled column, a man in a suit with a creepy pulled-taut skin dog-man face.
I went to the Tate the next day, I only had money enough for a plum from a fruit vendor to eat the whole day. The last room I went into after a full day in the museum, I turned the corner and there was a sculpture of the dog-man face, done by Francis Bacon. I don't remember the title, but I freaked out a little. |
