Just found out they are playing here in July, and I am really excited to find something that might be very good.

I hadn't heard anything until today -it reminds me of the best parts of Wilco, but more importantly, of old Calexico and a little bit of Cat Power, maybe Will Oldham, some Papa M, Aerial M, Souled American, The Court and Spark, Don Caballero, and Abilene, mixed with Throwing Muses sentiment. Bunch of good stuff (this is all based on my impression from one mp3 though!).

I guess they are on a tour, so you might want to see if they are in your area soon, if you like any of the bands I mentioned. I found one mp3 at http://search.insound.com/search/mp3results.jsp?query=secret+machines&fmt=4

Anybody here a fan? Any suggestions for similar music?

Discovered Ghost will be playing here too, in September. They are a Japanese band that has been around since 1984, and I know nothing about them -anyone heard them? Here is a little about them:

"Since their inception in Tokyo in 1984, Ghost have built a reputation for beautifully sprawling music that combines theremin, hurdy gurdy, guitars, oscillators, lute, exotic percussion, and horns, among many other instruments. The freewheeling ensemble (who record in caves, ruins, and churches) create a crystalline psych-folk sound that suddenly shifts with the rolling thunder of electric guitars. Their most recent Drag City release, Hypnotic Underworld, lives up to its title."

Do you guys know we just passed thru a BLACK HOLE in space?

Sadly not Apl. I found out that Nine Black Alps were not supporting and I didn't have anyone to go with.

Were you able to go, Mike? How was it?

So, we will be seeing Secret Machines, and now we have tickets to Ghost (in Columbus), the day after Devo (in Chicago). Ghost will be an interesting adventure -I haven't heard a single thing of theirs! They've been around since 1986, but it's all new to me. Here's a Pitchfork review of their latest album for anyone curious: http://pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/g/ghost/hypnotic-underworld.shtml
and another review:

(Thanks James, you were no small influence in tipping the scales for me. Gonna be a fun road trip!)

Hey Homer - keep us posted on how it was, will ya? I guess I will look into the Alps, and see what I can see.

Hopefully I am going to see Secret Machines on Monday at a very small venue in Manchester (Night And Day Cafe) 'cos Nine Black Alps are supporting them. Should be a great show.

By the way, they definitely do not have a female member.

Listen to Nine Black Alps.

The Secret Machines have a female member? She isn't in their line-up in their new video. Unless that guitarist is in fact a girl. Hmmmm, I'm confused now.

Anyway the song is very good but I can't remember what it is called. MTV2 have it on a hell of a lot.

Listen to Nine Black Alps.

"Why are you running can't you see that it's true? That's not a ghost it's a reflection of you." Oh wait, that's "Ghosts" by The Jam.

Hey neat, thanks a lot speedy_m. Don't see you around here much anymore, nice to have you droppin' by.

So has anyone heard of Ghost?

I don't think that song is on their latest... unless I missed downloading it. The one I have is called "Now Here Is Nowhere", and I just listened to it again, and it's actually pretty good. The opener is a big space rock epic (8 minutes +), and the rest of album incorporates a space rock/epic feel, creating very large, bombastic soundscapes, though there are quieter, moodier passages. The vocals (both male and female) are strong. This requires more listens.

Whoa, the title of this thread is changing faster than I change my underwear. Not that that would be that fast, but still... :)

What's it like speedy_m?

I've only heard the one song "it's a bad wind that don't blow somebody some good", from "September 000".

I can't seem to get into their latest album. Perhaps I'm just not trying hard enough...

Damn, I thought this was going to be a link to (or information on) classified machinary (machinery? can't spell today) that the government has hidden from the public eye. But the name Secret Machines is cool for a band. It's better than Machines of Loving Grace.
