Posted - 06/12/2004 : 06:59:50 is it cool to like the killers? i mean mike saw them a few weeks back, so i assumed they were rubbish, then saw them on CD:UK the next morning and thought, ahhh, strokes rip-offs... lovely... but my gf bought the album, and i have to say, there's some damn catchy songs on there.
but, it's very over-produced, i think i'd like to see them live to hear what they actually sound like as a band, rather than how great their producer is at adding layers and layers of guitars and weird noises together... also i don't like the vocals sound, makes strokes comparisons all too easy, i guess it's 80's sounding vocals, i think i'd like it more if they didn't do that and had cleaner vocals.

Nothing wrong with a bit of Girls Aloud, 'EnglishGeezer', if that is your real name.

Posted - 01/31/2005 : 15:39:42 Yeah it's weird 'cos they are both on majors (The Killers on Island, Stellastarr* on RCA) and both have really catchy songs but I think Shaun's (Stellastarr* lead singer) voice is more unusual, more likely to scare the casual 'indie' listener. Also I think Stellastarr*'s song's are more alternative, with more complex song structures. The Killers keep things a little more simple, which is to their benefit in terms of breaking into the mainstream.
Also, having just finished reading an article on The Killers, it's clear that Brandon Flowers (keyboards/lead vocals) REALLY wants it. he wants the band to be as big as U2, even bigger in fact, and he wants to be the next Bono (except hopefully not as up his own arse). Stellastarr* are more content to just make the best music that they can whether it sells or not. Shaun is an artist first and foremost, so as long as he has enough money to continue his art work, then I guess he will be happy. You can tell this from speaking to them, they are very nice people, very down to earth (well Shaun and Amanda are anyway, I have never met the other two).
Anyway Mel, I am glad you have decided to like new bands, there is a lot of them to get excited about, as you will find out when the next mix CD's go round.

Posted - 01/31/2005 : 14:45:50 I have given up wit this whole ' liking new bands is sooo uncool'. Some of these bands around are pretty damn cool. They are undeniably catchy. Particularly bands like the Killers.
I might not agree with the whole gossip magazine style stories around some of the bands - libertines being one...but i love music for the music.
Yeah, sure the vast majority of them have all ripped off a hundred other bands. But id like to see anyone name a recent popular song which has not been accused of 'ripping off' another one. Theres different degrees of borrowing riffs...a line i think we all make up our own minds as to wher eit should be drawn.
Mike - i agree i love Stellastarr*, and cant understand why they havent had the success of The killers. I would suggest that perhaps they are comfortable with where they are at...or they dont have a good enough manager

Posted - 01/31/2005 : 07:46:24 It would be but for Mark Lanegan my friend. Actually, who knows in the long term - Lanegan is of much higher quality all round, but the Killers are just so damn catchy they tend to get stuck on rotation.

Posted - 01/31/2005 : 04:37:19 Yeah I like them (seen them 4 times) but I think it's a shame that I saw them support Stellastarr*, and whilst The Killers have really taken off due to quite an English sound, Stellastarr* still haven't. I much prefer Stellastarr*. I hope one day, they too will get the recognition they deserve.
I still think Mr Brightside is an amazing song though.

Yes I agree. I have posted on another thread previously that I find music such as Lamb and Zero 7 to be impassioned. Bores me to tears.

Yeah and now you like it. That's my point, you weren't willing to give them a chance at first 'cos of rather silly reasons, then you actually listen to them and find that they are quite good. You should listen to me more often Simon, you'll find that I am often right.

You speak the absolute truth, Steve-O. First time I heard this I started singing along, then realised I'd actually never heard it before. Muchos ripoff, but then maybe Underworld never made it to Vegas, unlike some of the more unscrupulous elements on this board.
I know exactly what you mean, bumblio, I am immediately put off a band by lots of hype and/or NME 'saviours of rock'n'roll' pronouncements. The new Killers single is tres catchy though, and the last one was OK.
You know who I discovered didn't suck the other day? Faithless. I really like their new single, its ace with brilliant lyrics. Anyway, back to the subject...
