Posted - 06/11/2004 : 13:54:49 With Ray Charles and Johnny Cash dying, I was thinking who are the top 10 living legends in music. Here's my crack at it without the order meaning anything. Who did I miss? Any musicial genre (I can't think of any jazz legends still alive except Sonny Rollins).
Paul McCartney Bob Dylan Willie Nelson David Bowie Lou Reed James Brown Bruce Springsteen Brian Wilson Neil Young Elton John
On the bubble: Paul Simon Prince Ringo Star Aretha Franklin

Posted - 06/12/2004 : 17:09:02 John Lurie? That first Lounge Lizards record is kickass dope fresh. And he's done a lot of great music since, like the scores for Jim Jarmusch movies. And then there's Fishing with John, which I have yet to see but hear it's a lot of fun.

If we know for sure that rock ’n’ roll is truly the devil’s music—at least he fucking jams! And if it’s a choice between good tunes and eternal damnation, or eternal heaven and New Kids on the Fucking Block... I’m gonna be surfing on the Lake of Fire, rocking out |

Posted - 06/12/2004 : 13:04:15 Alright, to be legendary you have to be a person that inspires legends (that's roughly the definition). So, to me being a legend combines having skills or qualities that make you stand out and being well known.
Biafra, Richman, and others aren't well known. They aren't going to be mentioned on the front page of NYT when they die.
The list would be different if the question was greatest musicians, or most influential, or most admired by musicians. |

Posted - 06/11/2004 : 19:21:18 The entire population of the Ventures are also still alive, and touring frequently. Ralph Stanley is also still going strong. I also think Herbie Hancock gets overlooked a lot - Max Roach too. Mark Mothersbaugh as well - he is subtly influencing your children. Or you.
Many more I am sure...

Posted - 06/11/2004 : 17:41:24 Mixing talent and popularity is very, very dangerous. Nebraska is not a popular recording, I say this because I think most people (your lame criteria) have not heard it, myself included.
And, I think if we polled this forum Iggy Pop and Tom Waits would finish above Springsteen. Just my opinion, peace out. ;)

Screw that. Have you heard Nebraska? That's one of the greatest albums ever. The Boss is a legend even if the Born in the USA hype got too large. He doesn't get enough credit.
I was trying to mix musicial talent and some level of popularity. Because of that I don't think most people (lame criteria, I know) would put Iggy Pop or Tom Waits up there.
vilainde, I don't know who any of those people are? |
