London Mayoral Elections are just round the corner folks. Most of you blatantly won't care, so here's a quick introduction.
The current mayor is Ken Livingstone (Labour)(http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/3742825.stm), a virtual Communist who's been a controversial but reasonably succesful mayor. He's actually introduced a number of significant changes, and seems to be is unafraid to be totally outspoken if he feels he's in the right. Last time he stood as Independent because the Labour didn't want him on their books, now they've welcomed him back into the fold (coinciding with his sizeable lead in the opinion polls no less).

Steven Norris (Conservative) is the more right-centred candidate (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/3708489.stm) and he's currently running second. Professes an admiration of Margaret Thatcher...

Simon Hughes (Liberal Democrat). Third-party candidate, who has slim-to-none chance (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/3722383.stm)

The issues:
Transport (including congestion charge, tube, buses)
Cost Of Living (house prices, inflation)
Crime (violent crime, gun crime, policing, terror)
Pollution ('green zone', green belt, emissions, truck bans)

Who would you go for? I know who I would vote for (if I wasn't still registered somewhere else...duh), you can probably guess, but going on issues, wot about you lot?

EDIT: Just found a list of issues being stood for.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/news/election/mayoral_candidates.shtml

Here's some:
Frank Maloney (UK Independence Party): Legalise and licence brothels
Julian Leppert (British National Party): Make sure London "No longer welcomes economic migrants"
Ram Gidoomal (Christian People's Alliance): More public toilets

Not to imply that I thought the fact he was riding a bicycle was of much significance.

How close of a second is Steven Norris? I like his bicycle.

I nominate that we start a worldwide write-in campaign for Kilgore Trout. Every election, every position. All of you. And your dog.

ickle??
Sure, but the quotes are from "The Young Ones", and the last from that BBC interview w/Livingston.

Weird how it all matches up, isn't it? -made it very easy.

heheh - this is too much fun.

"The Bum Ones":
As Rick, Vyv, Neil, and Mike move into their new Mayoral house, the talking statue at the front door begins an odyssey of zaniness that is to culminate in a worker's revolution and a fully-fledged benefit concert in Trafalgar Square.

Rik "Gidoomal" (Public toilets, Oi!)
"The bathrooms free! Unlike the country under the Thatcher-ite junta!"

Mike "Norris" (Professes an Admiration of Margaret Thatcher)
"Fascist oiks at the Town Hall want to demolish the house. Why bother, with Vyv around to do the business for them?"

Vyvyan "Hughes" (Pollution, Hates Trucks, and Terror)
"This calls for a very special blend of psychology and extreme violence"

Neil "Livingstone" (Pinko)
"because I could make decisions that make a difference to people's lives."

sometimes down
But always around
Pollution
are you coming to my town
or am I coming to yours?
We're on different buses, pollution
but we're both using petrol

Someone is actually running on the "more public toilets" platform?? That takes some serious balls. The Christian People's Alliance, eh? Well, I have his campaign slogan all worked out for him in advance:

"Cleanliness is next to Gidoomaliness"
