Just watched this film. I haven't seen a 'new' film in ages that has scared me, so this was ace. Not only was it scary, but really well filmed and with an excellent storyline. It also didn't rely too heavily on special effects, generally avoiding the actual antagonist (sorry, don't want to give too much away!) in favour of effect and reaction (and a fair bit of gore!).
Good job all.
Anyone seen any good scary films recently? As in, actually scary. The only other ones I can think of are The Shining and Event Horizon, off the top of my head.

So instead of menstruating she turns into a werewolf? Like most women menstruating but with more body hair? Is this common with gymnasts? I knew there was some body dysmorphia but turning into a werewolf seems a little harsh for sports.. But I guess it worked for Teen-Wolf.
 I don't mean to sound bitter, cold, or cruel, but I am, so that's how it comes out.

the main character is a gymnast so there is minimal mensruating.

so it's a film about a hairy menstruating woman and discovery? Is there much bleeding other than that which is menstrual? Does she eat people? Is there any truley spectacular death scenes? I may well watch that if this be the case...

I saw GINGER SNAPS 2 last night. I think it's just as good as first one. It's fast, it's weird, it's well-made. The dark-haired younger sister from the first movie (Emily Perkins) is the star of this one. She looks great.
In this movie, Emily Perkins is trying to keep herself from turning into a werewolf by shooting up wolfsbane like heroin each day. And meanwhile the main werewolf from the first movie is looking for her because he wants to mate with her and make little werewolf babies. She gets taken for a drug addict and tossed into a rehab clinic/asylum with a bunch of other freaky girls.
I enjoyed the heck out of it.
I'm pathetic for remembering this thread. |

I only saw the whole film a couple of weeks ago; It's pretty good. By the way, the sequel(which got a very good review in a magazine recently)is out now on DVD(hav'nt seen it)and apparently there's another one on the way, suppossedly set in medieval times but featuring the sisters from the first two movies! |

You will either love it or hate it. There is no inbetween. If you love it then you appreciate good film-making. If you hate it, then you don't!!!

Never watched Blair Witch, so I'm not in real position to comment. However, I'm sure you're wrong, you mostly are.

I thought Ginger Snaps was average!!!
The best 'recent' one was Blair Witch project.

For me 1979 wasn't all that long ago. One day you'll believe 25 years can seem like a short time.......
I saw Alien a few weeks ago, all four released in a box set. All fresh in my memory, hence recent.

dude, weird. just randomly caught this film (missed begining, ie. biting and stuff but not so much that i couldn't work out what was going on). had no idea someone else would have seen it and there would be a thread on fb.net

Definitely scary though (the first more than the second). I find tension and suspense far more effective than lots of surprises and gore.

Ginger Snaps is a teenage girl werewolf movie. It's written by a woman and, as much as I remember, the 'turning into a werewolf' = 'developing womanhood' metaphor in the movie is right on the surface. In that respect and others, it's a cut above a lot of other b-horror stuff. It's a fun movie. |

Who is Ginger and why does she snap? Never heard of this before. In Carrie there was a scene where Carrie gets bullied when she freaks out about menstruating the first time, the she snaps. Carrie Snaps. Scary flick.
I've watched Audition on Friday evening, not as scary as I though it would be but some stomach churning torture scenes in it. Good film.
Alien and Aliens are the two recent films which scared the hell out of me. The fourth time I've watched these and I still jumped at some moments.

GINGER SNAPS is a good movie though I feel there's a whole dimension to it I'm missing because I've never menstruated.
A recent recommendable scary movie is the Japanese film, THE EYE. If its similarites to THE SIXTH SENSE don't bother you, it's pretty enjoyable. At least you oughta try to catch it before the upcoming westernized remake is released.
Also there's a movie from last year called MAY that's worth seeing. Like GINGER SNAPS, it's about a very disturbed girl and her very disturbed ways. It starts out a little too annoyingly funny-quirky for me, but after about a half hour it begins getting really good. Plus, in the DVD commentary you can hear the director and music supervisor talk about what big Pixies and Breeders fans they are. The movie uses two Breeders songs and has some pretty good original songs throughout. |
