Posted - 06/02/2004 : 21:51:05 Just watched this episode of Frontline. Yawn. So the music industry is run by corporate bean-counters. Tell me something I don't know.
"Merchants of Cool" was infinitely better. |

Posted - 06/02/2004 : 19:04:59 Well, to paraphrase a film I saw in junior high, radical ideas that threaten insitutions often become institutions. The whole concept of an "indie world" is kind of ridiculous in and of itself. It's like those people are creating their own mainstream.
Some lyrics that we all know, but are, perhaps, relevant in this situation:
They tried to give me advice Down at the record shop I said sit down boys This may come as a shock What's all I listen to It's all freedom rock

Posted - 06/02/2004 : 18:07:36 Yeah, thanks for the link. I agree, corporate stylings have indeed ruined a lot of the music world. The post-Nirvana world (you can actually blame Janes Addiction for this before Nirvana) of the severe blurring of over and underground. Remember when the only person you were likely to see with a nosering was that one fat goth girl in your high school? As opposed to every dirtball hessian you see?.....That's coporate cash in. The other I think of is cultural nostalgia tendicies. Is it me, or does every early twenty something hipster dork look like at least one member of the Brady Bunch? or maybe a guy with a Farrah Faucet hairdo? I've seen some of them wear capri pants. Im so sick of the seventies I could puke blood. On the other hand, I would say down with the man and all hail indy labels. The thing is, I happen to think the indy world is equally as sad as the major world if not worse, and more pretentious than it's ever been (give or take maybe a band here or there). Im not so sure of all the blame being able to be placed on the powers that run all this. People buy the shit. I think it's more about the lowering of standards (Bill Hicks nailed this one). What we accept as good lacks so much as opposed to what we used to think was good seemingly. I dunno, it's a toughie. The "everything's been done already" ruins a lot of good I think too.

Posted - 06/02/2004 : 17:14:31 I didn't see the show, but I think I'll have to agree with Bryan here. It isn't like hype and image creation are new to the musical world. There's always been a lot of overhyped crap out there, and there probably always will be. Yes, I'm sure some things have changed for the worse, and maybe record companies have gotten greedier over time, but it's not like there's no way to hear good music nowadays.

Posted - 06/02/2004 : 02:59:06 Wow, I really liked that Albini's article. I don't really care if he's exaggerating or not, but he speaks frankly, and it's something I appreciate a lot. That's something I like about Frank as well, the fact that he talks about money and stuff, he doesn't pretend that as an artist, he isn't concerned about money.
I keep feeling like people are just looking at screens and web sites all the time, but do they ever do anything? Or go out and say anything to anyone? I'm not so sure anymore. |

Posted - 06/01/2004 : 09:48:28 You do know that "American Pie" is about Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper, right? I think it's more a "play" on February 3, 1959...heh...as sad as it is..

There's a website that explains basically everything about the song, really interesting!

Posted - 06/01/2004 : 09:42:53 I watched the whole thing online & it was the same old "why does music suck now?" piece you've seen or read millions of times. Don't let David Crosby fool you; image and packaging has always been part of music. It's entertainment! Yes, good music speaks for itself, but if there's an interesting story or a fabulous looking person to go along with it, it's got more appeal. Many musicians got helped by looks long before MTV, and lots of unusual looking or just plain ugly people are still making music. Of course, fame and talent always make people look better. Sorry I'm ranting, but I got all riled up by that piece. Probably because I've got that terrible "Girl on the verge of a nervous breakdown" song stuck in my head Did anyone else think she came off as a little vacant?

Oh wait, there is no photo.
I'm still sure she's evil though. I think Caroly's in some sort of plot to take over the world with apl4eris, ramona and mereubu. Once they take care of Dave, Dean will be a push over and the world is theirs!!!
Maybe thats taking it too far.

Posted - 05/29/2004 : 16:24:55 Fair enough. A lot of what he says is still very true, and very relevant though, unfortunately. The whole 'getting a record deal' issue is one that is riddled with, well, EVIL!!! Not to put too mild a spin on it. Anyone interested in further reading, definitely check out 'Confessions Of A Record Producer' by Moses something. My copy has gone AWOL so sorry I can't give you the full name...

Posted - 05/29/2004 : 15:41:52 They are talking about this exact article over on the mclusky board. Apparently it was written in 1993 and Albini has since said things have changed. Its no longer a fair reflection.
Apparently.

Everyone even remotely interested in music should read this article. No one has said it more eloquently although many have quoted and plagiarized.

Posted - 05/28/2004 : 23:02:54 Saw it on PBS last night- it looked like it was going to be really interesting from the previews, but it ended up being super lame. Didn't tell us anything we don't already know, and featured Mark Hudson and his not-so-talented daughter, recording a really bad pop tune. Disappointing.

Posted - 05/28/2004 : 19:19:08 Steve Albini seems cool he seems to speak his mind which is always cool. I believe alot of what he says but some of it maybe a little exagerated.

Posted - 05/28/2004 : 13:33:22 I can't wait to see this.
There was another very interesting Frontline a few years ago called "The Merchants of Cool," about how the major media conglomerates market to teens.
It's all very enlightening in a very sad way. |

Posted - 05/28/2004 : 13:30:06 Thanks for the heads up, Jim. I feel like we're lucky that anyone still has the balls (or public funding) to talk about this. Hell, the Pixies are fighting this battle even now (DiscLive, venues, etc.) - Clear Channel is a major player in everything they do now.
