I saw this last week-it's a terrific movie made in 1971, with a bit of a cult following. Harold(played by Bud Cort)a rich kid who gets his kicks by feigning suicide and going to funerals;he meets an eccentic old lady(Ruth Gorden from Rosemary's Baby)who also likes to go to funerals and steals cars. Anyway, they fall in love amid all sorts of wacky goings-on. Cat Stevens dose the soundtrack(and has a cameo, I think)and Tom Skerrit makes an appeareance as a cop. It's a really witty, inventive, moving little movie-before I saw it, I though it was just a kind of kitsch, trashy 70's B-movie. But it's great, you've gotta check it out! |

Harold and Maude has been rather poignant for me recently.
First of all, there is this ebay auction which i posted and then chickened out of that has to do with this girl (ald desire simmering under surface) that was coming to visit suggesting I name my cats Harold and Maude ... and then oddly enough the female cat, Maude - was hit and killed not long after that was posted.
then the girl showed up and all kinds of shit happened...we both knew she was leaving and I said to her on the last night:
"The lesson of Harold and Maude is to live even though you know you're going to die. Maude knew she was leaving, but she loved and lived like she wasn't anyway."
We tried to live and love like we were going to last forever, but it stopped. Something stopped. I pulled back, she cried and now its all fucked, but we had a time.
A short one, but a time, nonetheless.
There may be more than one shot at love after all, starme.
Sure freekin hurts missing the mark, though.

When I was about 15 I went on a residential trip to north wales, a sort of climbing canoeing all action thing with another school, we got seperated into small "teams" a mix from both schools and I was dreading it to be honest, people I didn't know and people I didn't want to know.. but it was just great, as a group we got on so well and our leader, I wish I could remember her name was amazing, she used to play us Cohen in the minibus and when we went camping in the mountains by a lake she had us sing the songs we'd just heard. Late one night I was out reading on the rocks and she came and told me about this film, she said "It's about love and live and a boy who cuts his jaguar in half and welds it to a hearse, you will like this film" and years later my friend taped it off the TV for me and I recognised it for the one our Cohen loving leader told me about. Been converting people to the cause ever since.
Apl (oh where art thou apl!) is spot on about the Ruth Gordon character, she is inspiring. The first time I watched it I was told that I'd fall in love with Harold by the end of the film...
(I so did)

This is a great movie. I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did when I saw it. It is a very quirky,witty,smart movie. I've heard that Zack Braff drew some inspiration from H & M while writting Garden State. I can see some resemblance. What is your favorite way the Harold faked suicide?

I watched it for the billionth time last week which is why I ressurcted this, I use it as a people tester too but have to be very careful, my friend came over and I had to steel myself not to cry, I failed, badly.
But my friend liked it which means she can stay my friend now :P

My favorite part of H&M is when they conspire to make Harold's uncle lose interest in trying to get him in the army. That whole scene is pitch-perfect: the intro, the build-up, the surreal ending. Especially when he goes on about what trophies he'd collect from the enemy. It's brilliantly funny.

Kinda on the subject, I just recently borrowed a banjo from a friend of ours -does anyone have any advice on where to look for lessons/tips online? I would be so greatful. I was playing the durn thing in my dreams last night, but I woke up today, and nope, still nuthin'. I'm a total musical instrument novice.

"Harold and Maude" is in my top ten personal favorite movies. I can't say how many times I've watched it, but it struck a chord with me right from the start. It was the first movie my friend in high school (and now husband) and I went to see together. Ruth Gordon was an incredible lady, and she played such a compelling character - I aspire to that kind of character, and boy do we need more female role models like that. The dark but humanist humor is a riot. Really unique and wonderful movie.
Oh yeah! And the soundtrack is awesome. I love every single one of those songs, but "Trouble" gets me every time.
