So if anyone wants to send an email to WEM regarding the seals or the death of Roxy than this use this one;

Jill Rutledge, lagoon manager

So they said they bought 3 seals but really they bought 4 but 1 of them died en route to the mall from Scotland.

Nobody seems to know why.

Its a mall not a fucking zoo.

The whole point though, was supposed to be
not having exotic animals on display for shoppers' viewing pleasure.

WEM had a lot of grief from activists, I would've bet they wouldn't have put anything like seals in that area but...

A seal is a much better animal to have there than a dolphin, as the space required for a dolphin is much much larger and it should certainly be better there than even at a zoo. Or being clubbed.

You know what these dolts are doing now?!

They were supposed to have human acts in this area.
There was some high diving but things like the logroll or swimming didn't seem to work out.

So,
now they've just bought 3 new shiny seals. Morons...

I think we can depress ourselves in the knowledge that it won't be enough space for him!!!

Dean,
I can find no information on the exact size of the tank
or what size of tank would be considered sufficient etc.
All I can find is a general consensus that it was by no means an appropriate size and/or an appropriate environment for a dolphin.
Damn, everything is so non-specific.

West Edmonton Mall has so many other animals in it as well.
And I'm kind of in a mood but imo I hate WEM, to me it is symbolic of just about everything that is wrong in our western world today.
Unless FB is playing at Red's there, then its okay ;)
Dave Noisy Posted - 05/27/2004 : 18:32:39
Glad he's out of the mall...tho forcing him to endure people is kinda sad too..

I'm glad the people have so much space to swim around in.. *sigh*

That's what I meant about it goes underneath the rockslabs.
I spose I'll go try to find out how big that additional tank is.

Cripes by the time I'm done with this forum
I think I'll know everything! ;)
Cult_Of_Frank Posted - 05/27/2004 : 15:12:36
Carolyn, isn't that connected to a separate and much larger tank? I think it is, because that's where they kept the dolphins when they weren't doing those shows (they weren't swimming around in the show area).

Which is kind of funny
because look at the waterpark for chrissakes
Carolynanna Posted - 05/27/2004 : 14:27:01
In case you're curious this is what the lagoon looked like.

and I don't think you can tell,
but it goes underneath the rockslabs
so it is a bit bigger than it looks.

Well, it's at least heartening to see something done as the result of what seem to have been noncontroversial protests.

It looks like he'll be in a dolphin lagoon, where people can swim and wade with them -have you ever wanted to swim with dolphins? I think I would love to, but I feel really depressed even going to the zoo or a pet store, so I have a lot of mixed feelings about it.

I'b a lot happier if he was able to go back to the wild. Guess that aint gonna happen though.

Well Theatre of the Sea is definitely a place for shows.
It all seems so vague though, I can't find anything that says whether or not he'll be in them.
I bet he will.
It seems like the activists are pleased that at least he won't be alone.

This is the first I have heard of this. Poor Howard!!! I absolutely despise animal cruelty of any kind. And I especially love dolphins. Marvellous animals!!!

That's a ray of hope! At least he won't be alone -but what does this guy mean? Is he going to be used again at the "marine mammal park"? Man, this stuff really gets me bummed.

"Howard will be introduced to seven other dolphins at Theatre of the Sea, an entertainment park."
"There are no preconceived notions about Howard's participation in Theatre of the Sea's shows and/or interactive programs," mall general manager Gary Hanson said in a statement. "A safe, stimulating, caring, healthy place to live takes precedence over all other interests."

edit: I guess it's better than where he was, I'm sorry to point out the negative there.
