I don't get it. Being from the apple family makes them bad?

June 3, 2004
WINNIPEG (CP) -- A British ruling against Prairie-grown saskatoon berries is expected to trigger the removal of all saskatoon products from European Community store shelves.
The decision by Britain's Food Standards Agency, leaked last Friday, contends there is not enough evidence that saskatoons are safe. A written decision is expected June 9.
Canadian officials are scrambling to reverse the decision before it is released, said Markus Schmilgen, a member of the Canadian delegation that travelled to London last month to argue that saskatoon berries are safe to eat.
"Once the decision is on paper, it's very difficult to reverse," said Schmilgen, a manager with Manitoba's Food Development Centre in Portage la Prairie.
"We're in complete disbelief," he said Wednesday. "We don't know why this happened. We have no scientific reason."
Schmilgen said that if interventions by Canada's High Commissioner in England and the Canadian representative for the European Union fail, saskatoons could be yanked off store shelves in Europe next week.
The purple berries, which grow wild on shrubs across the prairies, are popular ingredients in pies and jams in Canada and are marketed as a topping for pancakes and ice cream.
The threatened prohibition on saskatoon product sales in Europe has rocked a Petersfield, Man., farm couple, who have invested $250,000 to introduce saskatoon berries to the world market.
"It's so ridiculous. There's something awfully wrong here," said John Ritz, whose company Prairie Lane Saskatoons is currently selling saskatoon products in 10 European countries.
Ritz said he has been told that if the products are pulled, it could take two to five years to get them back into Europe.
The Manitoba government expressed dismay at the development.
"I'm disappointed that saskatoons got caught in a European Union regulation issue," said Rosann Wowchuk, Manitoba's agriculture minister and deputy premier.
"We will have to make a decision as to how we proceed from here."
Schmilgen said saskatoons have been caught up in a regulation designed to catch genetically modified organisms.
Although saskatoons aren't genetically modified, they may have to be reviewed under the act which applies to food products "not substantially consumed" in the United Kingdom prior to 1997, said Schmilgen.
"Saskatoon berries got caught in a web that was never intended to catch anything like saskatoon berries," he said.
Canadian officials say saskatoons are similar to blueberries, and their usage as a food dates back centuries to aboriginal peoples, who mixed saskatoons with dried buffalo meat to make pemmican.
But Britain's Food Standards Agency has argued that the saskatoon is not a real berry like the blueberry, but is from the apple family.
Canada's foremost food scientist, Joe Mazza, said he hasn't given up the fight.
"I don't accept defeat easily," said Mazza, who led the Canadian contingent in Britain last month. "We're going to continue to fight. We lost the battle -- not the war."
Britain has shown a keen appetite for saskatoon berries since they were introduced about a year ago, consuming them in everything from ice-cream and baked goods to yogurt.
Prairie Lane has also begun selling dried, sweetened saskatoon berry infusions for foods like muffins and cheeses.

That was just to satisfy Carolyn, though.
Actually, they are pretty good. Brie cheese warmed and served in a saskatoon berry sauce is pretty delectable. Or the pie. Or the jam. Or the syrup. Or the berry. :)
