I love it!
Well, I'm not an obsessive fan, but I do like the fact that we have a sport which is totally indecipherable to anyone outside the Test playing nations.

I would imagine there's no other sport with quite the same range of bizarre vocabulary.
Googly = wrong'un
Chinaman = left arm off spin I think
Nightwatchman
Pop crease
Fielding positions include: wicketkeeper, slips, gully, silly mid off/on, third man, point.

Anyway, the first England vs New Zealand Test is on at Lords, and there's been some good cricket played recently.
England almost whitewashed the West Indies, won 3, drew 1, lost 0.
Murali (Muttiah Muralitharan) has broken the world record for Test wickets, but has been forced to give up his 'doosra'.

So, a cricket appreciation thread. Hands up if you have no clue what I'm talking about.

We're going to win! We're going to win!

Or at least draw, so as good as a win, that'll secure us the series.

Get in...

here's some maths: it was good about 5 mins ago -

Going at the current run-rate, England will need to bat for:

Another over to set a target of 210 @ over 4 runs an over
Another 7 overs to set a target of 231 @ over 5 runs an over
Another 12 overs to set a target of 249 @ over 6 runs an over
Another 17 overs to set a target of 263 @ over 7 runs an over
Another 19 overs to set a target of 273 @ over 8 runs an over

And yes, Freddie's gone. Down to Collingwood or Jones to be heroes......oh. :(

No! Ashley Giles!

him too, though the way he was going (dropped catches etc) I didn't think he would last long

It's down to Ashley Giles again! Oh yes.

Colly can bat some, he'll be OK - I don't trust Pieterson further than I can throw him though, I don't know how he'll manage...

I don't know when the first Ashes were, but I guess its a contender.

Freddie's gone, the fear has hit me.

I think you need to bat till tea to be pretty much safe. That last session would be awesome though. I think England have outplayed Australia in 3 out of the 5 Tests, but you have to win the Ashes.

Shane Warne is amazing. Brett Lee is looking good. McGrath is McGrath. The England top order gone. It is sport at its finest.

Incidentally, is this the longest sporting event between two teams in the world?

This is altogether too tense. I was fine this morning, but having worked out the maths with a colleague, I'm frightened again.
What injustice it would be to lose the series now...

This is fascinating stuff. England wobbling a bit, the Australians with their tails up.

Player of the series has to go to either Flintoff or Warne. (Warne just dropped an easy catch :D)

We need Jones to bat well tomorrow if we are to reach 400. He's capable.

Thought I should remind you of this.

Strauss got a lucky break there. Looked as if he edged it, but the Australians didn't appeal convincingly.

It's good isn't it :D In the pub last night there were cries of "come on the Ozzies" (as well as much hilarity at the England result). I genuinely want England to win this, they've been the better team and could have had it wrapped up already.

If Trescothick could have stayed in it could have been a big score, now England need Strauss to dig in and get a ton.

I can't take the tension, I really can't, I think this is going to be another thriller. If it goes down to a to-the-wire finish on Monday, I think I'll be crying before the session is up.

To support BTL about colorful baseball terms. Here is one of favorite quotes. Classic use of language. It's from Ed Lynch a pitcher in the 80s:

"The bases were drunk, and I painted the black with my best yakker. But blue squeezed me, and I went full. I came back with my heater, but the stick flares one the other way and chalk flies for two bases. Three earnies! Next thing I know, skipper hooks me and I'm sipping suds with the clubby."

No, they don't mention him getting more money in Aus. Some of the articles I've checked mention that the SA rugby union offered him a better deal than the Aus rugby union. I'll change my post above.

I'm not too certain how much the players get paid here but I know they've changed all the contracts recently. They only get loads of money if they win their games.

I think baseball ranks with any sport in the arena of funky terms. Americans use baseball terms every day whether describing events on the field or off. A few of my fave baseball terms:
eephus pitch
spitball
fungo
uncork (a wild pitch)
floater
Baltimore chop

Here is an online encyclopedia of over 5,000 baseball terms:

Good, NZ is fighting back. I watched McCullum batting, he is doing well. Tomorrow should be good.

Aye Benji, I saw a bit of the Crusaders going down. I don't like the Brumbies at all (they robbed Rathbone from us). The Brumbies had a few lucky wins this season which earned them the home final, them playing the final at home made all the difference. Maybe next year I'll see one of the local teams in the final.

I love cricket.

wish i was able to watch more of the test, but my wife won't let me....
but we (NZ) are fighting back now....
we'll get a lead of 350, declare and bowl the english out for 150.

wilhelm,
did ya watch the super 12 final this morning?
what a joke the first 19 minutes were...33-0 down...what the fuck.
over the game, the crusaders totally outplayed the brumbies, but no way were they ever going to catch them up....did fucking well to get to 47-38.

I don't know about that, but I was swimming in Bali once.

I know nothing about cricket, by the way. I'm an ignorant American, and I don't like sports (or sport, if you prefer; the British apparently took the S from the end and added it to "math") anyway.
