I've just read something about this, and it made me think how everything is square or rectangular.
Just look at this web site. You're looking at squares and rectangles. Streets, buildings, screens, windows, rooms. I think it highly influences the way we think. This is nothing new - advertising agencies know this very well, and the advertising strategy of Apple is to promote more circle-shaped stuff in order to suggest creativity.
Everything related to power and domination is rectangular. Take money, for example : it's always represented by a rectangle the size of which is more or less that of a hand (credit cards, checks, bills, wallets).
Is it possible for us to escape from this rectangular domination? Can we escape from the domination of money? I don't think so...
Everyone is saying that our new century will give birth to a spectacular move towards creativity and imagination, everything humans long for. They say we will create things with computers. On our square screens. |

You say this just because they want you to say it.
I keep feeling like people are just looking at screens and web sites all the time, but do they ever do anything? Or go out and say anything to anyone? I'm not so sure anymore.

Posted - 05/19/2004 : 10:30:28 I don't think there is any deeper meaning to the use of squares and rectangles. They look tidier, and you don't want a poor circular website to navigate, or a building that might roll away.
Power, the Pentagon? That's not square! I think it's more about straight lines than right angled quadrilaterals.
I'm personally fond of the triangle.

Posted - 05/19/2004 : 06:29:37 Buildings are traditionally squared because it's the simplest way to construct them. And what about coins, cd's, records, all the bubble style objects of the 70's?
