It has been awarded to South Africa

Posted - 05/15/2004 : 13:00:04 Thats alright, I don't mind that. They're building the new stadium about five minutes walk from where I work, which is nice. You'll be pleased with the result today then - entire season unbeaten, I'm well chuffed for them.

Posted - 05/15/2004 : 12:12:40 Football, rugby, cricket, I watch all of it. I learnt all about the beautifull game during my years at med school. One of my housemates was an Italian guy mad about football. I still watch the Italian club matches but it is not as good as the English Premiership. I'll keep quiet about my favorite English club, I know it can be a serious mistake to support the "wrong" team.
Simon, was I right about Therapy in your Name That Tune thread?

Posted - 05/15/2004 : 12:04:00 Some huge parties happening out here tonight. This will also do the economy pretty good. It is still a long way to go to 2010 though. One of the stadiums chosen to host some of the matches is just up the road from me. I'll have to remember who the nice folk on FB.net were when everybody starts looking for a place to stay in six years' time.

Posted - 05/15/2004 : 10:18:36 Agreed, though we´re still breaking our asses under the same draconian financial laws as back then so switch off your brain and let´s watch 22 grown men chase a bag of air around a field. That oughta take our minds off it. Woo! Bread and circuses, mister.

Posted - 05/15/2004 : 10:10:32 Well, for a start, there's slightly less maiming and bloodshed involved. Not much mind you, but less.
Southampton finished a disappointing 12th, fact fans. Above Portsmouth though, which is the important thing. We managed to lose to *%$£^ing Charlton though, or we could have been 8th. Dag nam it.
Hey, at least Man U didn't win.

Posted - 05/14/2004 : 16:07:45 Those things are skank. I got told off in the Two Oceans restaurant at Cape Point for teasing the baboon through the window with a packet of sugar. It was all rank and wet, scabby little vermin. There was one taking a leak off the roof of the gift shop, I'm sure he was aiming for people.

Posted - 05/14/2004 : 13:42:42 I know those dassies can be mean sometimes, I hear they've a fearsome bite.
The baboon pic reminds me of something which happened to my sister a few years ago. They took their kids to the beach and left the car window open. A baboon got into the car to munch on the kiddie's sweets. When the family returned to the car the baboon was still munching away behind the front seat. Neither my sister nor the baboon was aware of one another's presence, when she opened the front door it was havoc. The baboon shat itself and also managed to make a mess of the whole car before getting away. The car still reeked a year after the incident.

Posted - 05/14/2004 : 06:29:56 I know what you mean about Cape Town, that is why I like it so much. Kruger is excellent because you get away from the city. Did you at at least hear some lions roaring at night? It is an incredible experience waking up in the middle of the night feeling your tent shake from the noise.

Posted - 05/13/2004 : 08:57:18 Heh heh, my brother taught me that phrase, and thats how he told me to spell it! Crazy fool. The NE was great - much as I liked Cape Town, it didn't really feel like I was in a different country, if you know what I mean - very European. Ace beaches though, as on the NE coast. Kruger was wicked, though we didn't see any cats - still, elephants, rhino and hyenas are pretty cool.

Posted - 05/13/2004 : 07:50:18 Sounds like you've seen a lot. The weather has been incredible over the past few weeks, I don't know about Cape Town but the North East coast must have been spectacular. I'm glad to see you've made it to the Kruger as well.
Go gan det? Well, it is spelled "Hoe gaan dit?". Hoe pronounced same as who, gaan same as gun but the u longer and the g softer, dit same as ditto without the o of course.
Glad you liked the food. Now you'll have another reason to want to come back.

Posted - 05/13/2004 : 06:15:04 It was far too short, man, but it was great anyway. We did the whistlestop tour ('Japanese Speed Tourism'). Cape Town for a few days, flew to Durbs and stayed near Ballito for a while. Then drove up (via St Lucia) and stayed in a beehive hut in Swaziland for a coupla days. Finally, drove to Kruger for two nights, then hacked it over to Vaalwater for the last night. I'd have loved longer, but it just wasn't feasible. I'd love to come back, I love the country. Um, go gan det? Is that right? fineself!
Also, mmm-mmm, food. Bobotie, boerewors, biltong, braai, its all good.

Posted - 05/12/2004 : 15:50:06 I don't think it's politics. I just don't think Libya, Egypt, and Morocco are good places to hold a large international event like the World Cup. Maybe things will calm down in 6 years, but right now there are some pretty unhappy people in that part of the world. |

Unfortunately we've a few extremist groups over here aligned with Al Qaeda. Ever heard of the Planet Hollywood bombing in Cape Town a few years ago?
Safety and security would be the main cause for SA losing the bid.

But is SA really more dangerous than Egypt, Libya, or Morocco (I don't know if Tunisia has much of a terrorist problem)? Why don't they let Palenstine/Israel cohost? It would add the excitement of seeing which players survive. |
