OK, so I don't sleep easily or well. This is common knowledge amongst my family. It takes me up to an hour to fall asleep once I get out of bed, no matter how tired I am (unless I'm absolutely wiped).

So, regardless, I woke up at 4:30AM (which is why I'm up right now) this morning to my phone ringing. And not just three or four times, but maybe 25 times. So I get out of bed thinking this is some sort of emergency and my sister (age 20, btw) is on the other end bawling. Of course, I'm very worried at this point.

So what does she say? What's happened? There's a 'big' spider downstairs that I have to come kill. She is terrified. She's got an illness or something I truly think. I mean, you get a hard piece of plastic or a broom, you squish, done. And this spider wasn't in her room or near her bed, it was on the bloody stairway.

I should also mention I'm not the most pleasant person when I "rise & shine" and I was pissed. Now as anger subsides a bit, I just wonder if there's anyone else that's this afraid (I should also mention that we don't have poisonous spiders here in Saskatchewan and that her 'big' spider was perhaps a centimetre in length). And I wonder if there's some sort of treatment for it. Because growing up doesn't seem to have worked. Seriously, what will she do when she's living on her own?

Anyway, I'm tired and grumpy and presuming I'm able to fall asleep again, I'll probably wonder why I posted this in the morning, but there you have it...

My goodness she can't even put a cup over it,
wow your sister is a wimp! ;)

I was going to say put a cup over it and then you can slide a piece of paper underneath and throw it outside but...
Cult_Of_Frank Posted - 05/11/2004 : 16:08:44
Are you kidding?! She was across the room holding a tupperware container and deathly afraid to go anywhere near it. I thought she was holding it for protection, turns out she was so sick about this spider she thought she was going to throw up.

The weird thing is that I know of no incidences that should've caused such massive fear.

I had a friend who was too chicken to get rid of bugs as well.
She would spray hairspray on them until they were dead and stiff.

Dean tell your sister to just put a cup over it and then wait for someone to take it away later.

They are totally aggressive!
We were poking it (hehe) with a twist-tie and the thing actually grabbed it and latched on and proceeded to bite the shit out of it!
Ahh good times good times.

It was a wandering banana spider guys, check it out, scary!

http://triffophoto3.tripod.com/tpo/id8.html

"Speedy and unpredictable, several large Ctenid species will readily attack if surprised or provoked. Reports of people getting 'chased' by these spiders are not uncommon. Such aggressive disposition, combined with extremely toxic venom and a propensity to 'wander' into human habitation, may arguably qualify some Ctenids as the world's most dangerous spiders."

It also says its common for them to come over in the bananas.
But my bro told me they should've been dead due to all the chemical showers the fruit goes through.
Scary b/c those guys don't work with gloves all the time.

My (23 and hot) friend has a cat that constantly is bringing gophers and the like into her place. She called me last week in the middle of the night all freaked out about some animal in her house. She asks if she can sleep over and I was like SURE! We dated a couple of years ago and i still have a crush on her.
Unfortunately I was in a hotel in LA at the time.
The next night she said if it was still there she was going to sleep over again. Unfortunately it wasn't.
I spent the rest of the week sneaking down to her place at night making squeaky noises in her window.

We have a spider living in our foyer.

I think s/he has been there for a while. A few months, anyway.

I mean, it's not hurting me. It's not eating holes in the walls.

S/he can share some space with me and the fam.

There is a furry jumping spider regarding me intently about 2 feet away from me on my desk.

I got really close and told him how cute he was, and he turned around and I noticed his fangs. They seem to be glowing in the dark.

I'm scared.

We do get plenty of Black Widow and Brown Recluse spiders in these parts, so it does tend to make you think twice. I too have been getting a bunch of spider bites while I'm sleeping. I'll get about five or six all over my lower mid-section, like my stomach and thighs. They take about two or three weeks to heal, and get all red and irritated. Whenever I'm having trouble sleeping, I start thinking about it, and it keeps me up half the night.

I'm more scared of the IDEA that a spider might be under my computer desk ready to bite my foot.

You should probably check under your desk just to make sure there are no spiders...

I wonder if so many people are scared of spiders because they always look like they're ready to pounce, maybe if they shuffled around on their asses like dogs with worms less people would feel afraid.

we had a pool growing up, and every year during the summer, i would find these dead baby tarantulas at the bottom of the pool (cleaning the pool was one of my chores). i say baby tarantulas becasue they weren't like the full sized ones you see in pet stores or on the animal channel or whatever. but they were still big. like, their legs spread about the size of a silver dollar, to give you an idea. also, there would always be a group of them (like 4 or 5) so i figured they must be fresh offspring.

anyway, that was creepy enough. just knowing that there were obviously tarantulas in the hill by our house. and they were creepy to look at up close (they're pretty scarey looking things, after going through childhood watching the animal channel and seeing Indina Jones). but one time, i put one of them in a jar (i don't know why) and day later, it started moving. i was like, "holy fucking shit".. so, i tried to keep it as a pet but it ended up dying. and after that, i tried the same thing with several others. they would "come back to life" but they wouldn't eat any of the food i gave them.

very weird. i still don't understand how they didn't "drown"... i'm assuming it has something to do with they way they take in oxygen (they don't have lungs).

anyway, that's my pointless spider story. .

those....not so much.

I have a weird thing about being nervous about certain types of spiders and adoring others. Like, fast spiders, aggressive ones (wolf spiders and the like), I don't like very much at all. But the jumping furry spiders with the big beady eyes are fine by me.
We never kill our spiders - we have recycled jars all over the house and keep the little magazine card inserts and catch and release them outside. Spiders are great for keeping the other bugs at bay, and I feel it's bad juju to kill 'em.

That said, I have been getting a lot of spider bites, one of which I believe was in my belly button - that was kinda scary. My wife has to check the bed for spiders every night before she goes to sleep. Which is pretty annoying if I've gone to bed earlier than her. However, she will kill them herself.
