Posted - 05/07/2004 : 03:47:56 This is a request to any L.A residents to give me some insight as to where to go to sample your fine city, as i will be there for a week in July, oh and Independence day included. I am into Music and being Irish i like to party but i don't want to spend my time there in bars and being written off, i do enough of that at home. So if any of you could recommend some good beaches, bars, clubs, brothels (sarcasm font). That would be mighty fine. Thanks in advance. |

hey slavish, which Santa Monica Mountains hike are you talking about? that's my favorite hike too. i have a spot i go to, that i don't think too many people know about. it's never crowded. the views from up there are amazing . you can see everything.
there is plenty more to suggest for LA, but that's a starting point.. he only has a week.
restaurant recommendations is a whole other topic unto itself. [/quote]
Well, for a quick hike I love the ever-popular Temescal Ridge.
Another great one is Los Liones- on Sunset right near the PCH.
Also great are the various choices in Topanga Canyon.
And Corral Canyon in Malibu kicks ass.
That list is in order of convenience.
(still can't figure out the font size thing. what do you do?) |

Posted - 05/10/2004 : 02:37:55 Many thanks Floop for the insider information, much appreciated. I'm gonna copy and paste that info into my newly to be created "floop's guide to L.a for a sunburnt paddy" handbook. I really am thanks a million. I like the sound of that museum with the panoramic views of L.A , that sounds like just the place to wait in Los Angeles in the pouring sun. As for the fee , the cheque is in the post my American friend. :Thanks for the rest of the posts guys all relevant and informative as i have come to expect from you fine people on this fine board. |

i'll wait in the pouring sun........
i think floop, our ambassador of the world, covered it. rent a car, btw. if you're going to be all european and stay at a hostel, the ONLY decent one in l.a. is the iyh ( i think- the big affiliated one) in santa monica. DO NOT stay in venice or hollywood- trust me. if you must go see hollywood blvd., walk of fame, etc, go at night. the lights are really cool and not as many tourists. eat in little tokyo. oh, here i go giving advice when i said that floop had covered it all. i can't resist- i just left l.a. after seven years for new york. it still has a warm place in my heart. if you love asian food, l.a. is the place to be. koreatown kicks ass- vermont ave, new hampshire ave, olympic blvd. you can't go wrong. ohmygoodness- my absolute favorite thing to do in l.a. is hike the santa monica mountains. oh yes- go rent a pair of roller blades and tear up the trails on the beach. have fun! wear sunscreen!

Posted - 05/07/2004 : 10:09:13 check LA Weekly http://www.laweekly.com and/or www.la.com while you're here (or before). The Troubadour, Spaceland, El Rey, and The Echo are all cool places to see a show (among many many)..
here's a quick list of stuff you could check out:
SITES:
The Getty Museum www.getty.edu/" target="_blank">http://www.getty.edu/ - their collection isn't always amazing, but just seeing the building, and the view from the building, is spectacular. panoramic views of Los Angeles.. places to hang out on the grass and chill. good snacks. cute girls. since the Griffith Observatory is closed for renovation, this is a good substitute.
Amoeba Records - www.amoebamusic.com" target="_blank">http://www.amoebamusic.com any self-respecting music snob has to stop at Amoeba when they come to LA.
if you're at Amoeba, you may as well see a movie at the Archlight down the street www.arclightcinemas.com/homepage.jsp" target="_blank">http://www.arclightcinemas.com/homepage.jsp which is the creme de la creme of movie theatres.
Santa Monica / Venice Beach - you should just make your way to the Santa Monica pier and you'll be able to figure it out from there. there's tons of shopping at the Promenade, if you want to hang out with other tourists, or you can just cruise down the beach enjoy the sights. off the Promenade is Kings Head Tavern, a British pub.. which is pretty cool. should you need a pint.
if you want to check out Downtown, you should see the new Walt Disney Concert Hall, which has transformed downtown into a work of art http://wdch.laphil.com/home.cfm . and if you're there, you may as well go to MOCA (museum of contemporary art) down the street www.moca-la.org/index.php" target="_blank">http://www.moca-la.org/index.php
from there, if you want to go to a swanky Los Angeles type bar, you can check out the hotel bar at The Standard, which is on the rooftop. www.standardhotel.com/index_flash.html" target="_blank">http://www.standardhotel.com/index_flash.html
or head over to Chinatown for dim sum and buying cheap weird stuff. www.chinatownla.com/launch.html" target="_blank">http://www.chinatownla.com/launch.html that's a fun area to check out. and from there, yet another currently trendy very "La" bar is Mountain Bar www.la.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/cgpportal.woa/wa/path?urlpath=%2Fnightlife%2Fguides%2Fmartinismore%2F6635" target="_blank">http://www.la.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/cgpportal.woa/wa/path?urlpath=%2Fnightlife%2Fguides%2Fmartinismore%2F6635
EAST SIDE BARS:
equally pretentious and hipster but less swanky is the East Side (Los Feliz / Silverlake / Echo Park).. Bigfoot Lodge, Spaceland, The Echo are all cool places. also in Los Feliz, The Dresden (featured in the movie SWINGERS) is a cool place to have a cocktail and check out the now-famous Marty and Elaine.
WEST SIDE BARS:
one of the only places i like on the west side is LIQUID KITTY, in West Los Angeles. good music. cute girls. O'BRIAN's (on Wilshire) is a good Irish pub. if you just want to go to a place where there'll be tons of hot girls, but shitty music, CIRCLE BAR on Main Street (in Santa Monica) is the place to go.
HOLLYWOOD:
JONES and THE FORMOSA are right across the street from each other. cool old-school Hollywood establishments. BEAUTY BAR, THE CAT AND FIDDLE, GOLDFINGERS are all fun bars/clubs..
i'm sure i'll think of more stuff, but that's a good start to give you some options.
and for you, i will reduce my usual fee. please pay immediately. |
