Yeah, yeah, Spoon's coming to Minneapolis, I see you with your salt over there... :)
I can't really pick a favourite, it goes all over the place. Lately, though, I've been really stuck on Me & The Bean from Girls Can Tell. Each has been my favourite at somepoint.
I figured that since he had a mix of Pixies & FB stuff, KTM was a good starter. If he'd said early Pixies was his favourite (Surfer/COP) then I'd probably tell him to hook up with Telephono (if he can find it) or failing that, A Series of Sneaks. With the TOTY mention alone, the best choice might've been Girls Can Tell, their most poppy album. KTM seems to encompass elements of all these things.
I didn't know Spoon & Wilco had the same manager, very interesting...
I guess that means we'll never see Spoon up here either.

i prefer Girls To Tell by a little bit, but Kill The Moonlight and Series of Snakes are both really great too.
speaking of Spoon & Wilco, they share the same manager :)

Hard to pick a fave COF, but if I had to take one album with me on a long, long vacation it would probably be Teenager of the Year. If I could take three. TOTY, Doolittle and Show me your Tears. Keep in mind this is today, tomorrow might be different.

Understandable. I'd say your best bet is Kill The Moonlight given that list.

New Pornographers
Grandaddy
Air
Beulah
i think all four of these bands are leaps and bounds more interesting than Wilco in terms of inventiveness, creativity, imagination, rockinness etc.. i think Wilco is fine for what they do. but what they do is pretty run of the mill. i got Yankee Foxtrot Hotel after hearing from EVERYONE how great it was, including people who's opinions i truly trust. and it bored me to death.
the first New Pornographers album has yet to bore me. there are more hooks in one song from MASS ROMANTIC or ELECTRIC VERSION than there are in all of Wilco's catalogue.
Grandaddy, while not everyone's taste, i think are truly original artists. their sound is SO them, and can't be anything else. Jason Lytle is an amazing lyricist (poet).. and in their spacy, lo/hi fi electronica they've created this whole universe of music that's very unique. listen to THE SOFTWARE SLUMP or UNDER THE WESTERN FREEWAY.
AIR has slowly become one of my recent favorite bands. at first i found some of their stuff kind of off-putting, but then i felt like i "got" it. i think they're music is partially (just a little bit) tongue-in-cheek.. because it's so over the top in terms of being "arty" and pretentious. but there's more going on in their lyrics than i think most people think. like Grandaddy, they write these amazing similarly-themed songs dealing with subjects like artificial intelligence, technology, and the human "soul" (for lack of a better description).. listen to 10,000 HZ LEGEND (even though everyone will tell you to listen to MOON SAFARI). but listen to it a couple times.
Beulah - i still don't know why Beulah aren't bigger than they are. it's kind of cool though because i feel like it's my little secret. listen to WHEN YOUR HEARTSTRINGS BREAK or THE COAST IS NEVER CLEAR.. if you don't fall in love with either of those albums then we are just not sympatico.
and that's ok too..

Spoon is great shine, just answer me this. Of all FB's Pixies/FB stuff combined, which album was your favourite? Armed with this knowledge, we should be able to get you started right. That said, you can't really start 'wrong'.

Floop, if Wilco is mediocre, then there's a helluva lot more amazing music out there than I realized, and that I wouldn't have heard much music that goes beyond the mediocre cateogory. If you can give me 3 artists who you consider to be FAR superior to Wilco and I listen to them and agree, well, then I'll agree. And don't give me any jokes like saying Puddle of Mudd, Backstreet Boys or Jay-Z are better. Give me three bands that kick tons more ass than Wilco, and I'll listen (if I haven't already) and see what I think.

Any band that can pull off putting "Chicago Manual of Style" into their lyrics gets my respect. I bought Kill the Moonlight based on postings on this forum and have been very pleased. Very catchy and unique.
My to buy list is:
another Spoon album
the first The New Pornographers album
Wilco's new one
David Byrne has a new out or on the way |

i personally prefer kill the moonlight, but i think girls can tell is a better starting point

I was listening to "Girls Can Tell" just this evening, but I have both those Sir Rockabye mentioned. How much more material do they have? It's hard for me to choose between the two. But either one of those would give you a good jumping off point. |

I don't know about the tastes of everyone else here, but I tend to like Spoon, quite a bit. I would suggest "Kill The Moonlight". Its a really catchy record, has a bunch of good tunes on it. "Girls Can Tell" is also good, but I like Moonlight better.

None. Buy the Wilco album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and listen to Radio Cure and Jesus Etc. If you don't like those songs, you're hopeless.
