i always figured that, on an even deeper level, Drivin' on 9 was about Kim's desire to write an album as good as Frank's first self-titled album. with the "following the yellow brick road" idea being a metaphor for her artistic aspirations.

You mean the orange brick road, right?

But the band has said that "La La Love You" isn't actually about love.

Dean, your right, man.

Also Dave Lovering can't be the Tin Man because Dave clearly expresses feelings of deep love and affection in "La La Love You." Can one la la love without a heart?

An interesting interpretation, Derek, but I had to make a few corrections for the good of everyone:

1) Frank would not be Dorothy, but would in fact be tin man. I now will quote the man to make my case: "I'm lonely/just a man of steel". Further, he has a 'tiny heart' which is an affliction shared with Tin Man.

2) Kim could be Dorothy. They're girls. And isn't Drivin' on 9 just a metaphor for walking the yellow brick road? I think so.

3) You nailed Joey on the money. Cowardly lion it is.

4) Dave Lovering is the scarecrow. Because that's all that's left. :)

Yes, the Catholics killed him. That's what he got for being Protestant during Mary Tudor's reign over England!

if the Pixies were the Wizard of Oz characters, who would be who?

ProverbialCereal Posted - 05/06/2004 : 21:59:52
I think Frank is the brain of the Pixies, Joey the limbs, Dave the skin (of course), and Kim is probably the heart.

Great analogy.

No matter what anyone said, the Pixies to me are the entire band. Sure, there's a leader, but I think that each of their roles were crucial to that sound that made them so enjoyable and unique. And yes, I think Joey plays almost as crucial a role with his guitar as Charles does with his songwriting, singing and strumming. Joey has the most angular yet accessible approach to playing guitar. One half of it is bizarre bending that makes the guitar squawk (listen to the parts in "Dead" right after Black screams "DEAD!"), and Joey also likes to hit the wrong note, but after you listen a few times, it seems so right! Then he has the Neil Young one note solos like "Manta Ray." But then there's uber-melodic solos like "Hey" and the descending "Alec Eiffel" guitar parts.
Dave's drums are very unique, too. As unique as drums can be. I like the way he'll play it pretty straight without other than snare being noticeable, and then just bring a drum fill in that makes the song rock that much more. One of my favorite things he's ever done was on Tame where in the second verse, he rides the high hat and then hits the snare throughout the verse, just sounding like "tickity tickity tickity SNAP!"
Kim Deal's bass playing was a big part of the sound, too. Even though simple, that bass on Monkey Gone to Heaven is just killer. And there's great bass lines on Here Comes Your Man, Space (I Believe In), Is She Weird?. Plus, a big part of the Pixies sound is Kim's backing vocals. Here Comes Your Man would not be Here Comes Your Man without "So long, so long" with Kim's voice singing it. And Gigantic has to be one of the best songs on Surfer Rosa. I know a lot of people like the more raucous, hyperactive songs on that album, but I'm more a fan of good old-fashioned songs. And how about the collaboration for vocals between Black and Kim on "I Bleed."? Or her "Ah ha ha" on Tame combined with Black's, which ends up sounding like musical fucking. So many great moments involving Kim which help define the Pixies sound. So no, Charles Thompson was never the only important role in the Pixies.

There's a interview in an old guitar magazine, where he says the Pixies records were kind-of his solo records too, because he insisted on taking over the sessions and being an "asshole"!

Yes, in reality, Kim Deal is the same as Kelley Deal. But Mrs. John Murphy is actually Joey.

Many people think that Frank Black is Black Francis, and they also think that Kim Deal, from the Breeders, is Mrs John Murphy. Probably because they look similar.

TarTar Posted - 05/05/2004 : 18:02:19
No, Frank Black was never in the Pixies. You are getting him mixed up with a man named Black Francis.
